I don’t like the “stop and surrender your papers” aspect of this, but that said, it is certainly Arizona’s right to attempt to do something about what has become a big problem. And it is not just Hispanics who cross the Mexican border: the border has become a gateway for Africans, Middle Easterners and Chinese, all of whom are routinely smuggled by criminal gangs into the US through its southern border.

I would prefer a law that would require checking the immigration status of people asking for government services, ticketed at traffic stops, voting, etc. - that is, some moment when there is a legitimate reason for it, and not just at random because they may have a foreign accent. Then, of course, anybody found in violation has got to be deported immediately, something that nobody seems able to do (witness Obama’s illegal alien auntie still living in city housing in Boston).

Just what I was thinking.

Well put.

And as for Bamabi’s crazy Aunt, can you believe it? No outrage at all anywhere in America, that our Prez would allow this???

How do old Aunts from Nigeria get here, and stay here, anyway? Walk in?

That’s ok then. If they’re stopped for something else, they should be able to produce some valid ID. The same is true if they want to get benefits, vote, etc.

I thought this was just a “stop and frisk” based on appearance or accent.

Think about why you thought that. It is because that is what the liberals want you to think. The media are shilling for them, just as they do on so many issues.

There is no such provision of this law. There is no requirement for anybody, citizen or not, to carry "papers."

I would prefer a law that would require checking the immigration status of people asking for government services, ticketed at traffic stops, voting, etc. - that is, some moment when there is a legitimate reason for it, and not just at random because they may have a foreign accent.

Then this is the law for you.

Read the law, not the CNN or New York Times summary.

This is an excellent article. The government needs to be very, very careful about how they address this. I’m sure they are thinking this is just Arizona, but if they do the wrong thing, the entire country will rise to the aid of Arizona. Everyone is sick of the law breaking. Either we are a nation of laws or we are not. If not, we don’t need Washington DC and we don’t need congess. We could save a whole bunch of money by eliminating both. Don’t give us an excuse Washington or you will be joining the ranks of the unemployed.

livius, that is exactly what this law is. So many are jumping off the deep end without even knowing what this law contains. All it does is allows the police to ask about immigration status if there is a reason (i.e. the commission of a crime, driving under the influence, or driving a pickup truck or van with 27 people stuffed inside who can't speak english are and terrified)
