NEW HAVEN A 40-year-old man apparently picked the wrong person to try to rob at knife point Monday and ended up at the hospital with two gunshot wounds to the chest, police said.
As the alleged would-be robber lay wounded, his intended victim called 911.
The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on Wooster Place just outside Columbus Park in the Wooster Square neighborhood.
The shooting victim, tentatively identified by a source as Hector Santiago, 40, is expected to recover, and was speaking to police. The shooter, who police said is 65 and from out of town, waited at the scene for officers to arrive and was brought to police headquarters to be interviewed. He was later released, police said.

Police spokesman Joe Avery added that the man brandished a knife, and thats when his intended victim pulled out a gun. The shooter is licensed to carry the weapon, police said, and there was no information on any charges.

Wooster Square is the old Little Italy, and home to many Yale graduate students these days. Although New Haven as a whole is a pit, this isn't a bad neighborhood. The perp probably thought that he had an easy target, a Yale professor perhaps. Happy to see CCW in action.
Even some of the smaller calibers can be reasonably effective these days with the right ammo.

CONCEALED CARRY?????
Ok, I’m being a bit facetious, but I’m not a Concealed-Carry expert
and being a hick from flyover country...
I’m fairly stunned to learn that CT, being in the upper northeast USA,
apparently has concealed carry.
As I often say in situations like this (where the good guys unexpectedly win)...
“maybe there is still hope for this country”.
prolly?
In Texas, you can carry your loaded concealed weapon in your vehicle without a concealed carry license. The definition of “traveling” changed a couple of years ago, so any time you’re in your car you’re traveling. You just can’t carry it on your person into the mall. FYI for Freepers who travel through Texas.
I have the very same Kel-Tec. Great for concealed carry in the back pocket or in my wife's purse. It's not a hand cannon, but it will get the job done. I really don't care if it kills the attacker or not; I just want the attack to cease.
Great info. Kind of the opposite of PA - you can openly carry it on your person without a license, but the moment you step into your car with it, you’re considered “concealed” and can be arrested for carrying without a license.
You better say "I feared for my life, officer." Otherwise you might get yourself into some real trouble.
When I first broke mine down, it was a beatch to separate and when I finally got it apart, the polymer frame cracked. I had to send it back to Kel-Tec for repair.
Luckily, it has a lifetime warranty!
I assume that you prefer your "beloved" go to your widow.
Sounds like false economy to me.
Cecilia Dougherty, who lives on Chapel Street facing the park, heard gunshots.
I thought, No, that cant be. Then 30 seconds later I see all the police, she said. Its pretty scary in the middle of the day in Wooster Square.
There was some reassurance that the victim apparently was defending himself.
Even so, she added, If youre walking your dog, for example, you dont expect the person next to you to have a gun for any reason.
-Just amazing, I guess she would have been happy if the old guy had just handed over his money and got stabbed to death for his efforts. Such stupidity does not need to breed...
I haven't broken it down yet. We have only used it a few times in the CWP qualifying course. I cleaned out the barrel. For home defense, we have a shotgun and a couple of 5-shot 38 revolvers. I like the revolver more than the semi due to ease of cleaning and reliability.
The instructions say to press down against the frame when pulling the release pin out and I didn't. This failure on my part caused the little spring (trigger spring?) to get in the way of the release and then I applied to much pressure, cracking the frame.
Obviously, I will be more careful next time!;-)
Other than that problem, I love the little thing!!! Best conceal carry weapon I have ever seen...and, though small in caliber, it's a good deterrent. And surprising accurate after a little practice.
Thank you for the tip. I will keep it in mind when taking it apart.
My primary carry gun is now a stainless steel .44 special 5 shot revolver...
Since I'm not entering into a variety of situations that law enforcement must go, I find the 5 shot more than adequate to dispatch the typical “thug” encounter....
BTW, the ballistics on a .44 special are nothing short of phenomenal....
Better her than the Police Chief Retirement Fund.
But it won't. I have a lifetime range membership, I reload, and practice is cheap and fun. I carry the .45 in Winter, though.
“Although New Haven as a whole is a pit, this isn’t a bad neighborhood.”
The pizza on Wooster Street makes up for any pitfalls the area might have. As a matter of fact the pizza from New Haven will be my primary reason to visit there again.
For example, there were three of us coming home from a restaurant. One of the guys said to me a few days latter, "thank you for saving my life ..." that is great but his mom and his family told him to stay away from me because she expected a retaliation against me. He was an adult he would come to see me I could come over to his place but i wasn't allowed over his moms home. I knew them since I was in grammar school.
After she said that I got a call I believe was a threat of a retaliation. I asked for the police to monitor my phone for a while, but nothing happened thank goodness.
I can relate to that. The only thing I miss about NY is the heavier clothing that's possible most of the year.
I have experience with handguns almost ending up with the police. A friend of mine lost his solo game of Russian roulette using my favorite S&W. Of course, it was taken for lab testing, and then it seemed to disappear. The police said the lab still had it, the lab claiming it was returned. I finally ended up searching through a pile of guns in the police locker, and not finding it. I told the officer there that I was not giving up. He told me to come back the next day and try again. Lo and behold, there it was in the locker we emptied the day before. I believe he knew who had it, and put the word out to bring it back.
