Multiculturalism fails Canada
Toronto Sun ^ | 2010-05-01 | Salim Mansur

Posted on 05/01/2010 2:24:54 PM PDT by Clive

The recent comments by Ujjal Dosanjh, former NDP premier of British Columbia and present Liberal MP for Vancouver South, in reference to multiculturalism and political correctness are politically significant and commendable.

The high value of Dosanjh asking tough and relevant questions on a subject that is near taboo among the political and media elite is partly because he represents liberal-left thinking in the country.

In a column for the National Post on April 23, Dosanjh contended minority communities — immigrants of non-European origin — threaten the social fabric of Canada by an obsession with injustices in their “homelands” in the recent or distant past. The result is excessive emphasis “placed on the differences that keep us apart from each other” and “diminishing emphasis on commonalities and values that bind us.”

Dosanjh knows from experience what he speaks and writes about in unmasking the negative consequences of multiculturalism. He was a prominent victim of violence for publicly opposing extremists in the Sikh community to which he belongs by birth.

Sikh extremists are not alone in sheltering behind the politics of multiculturalism, then pushing their agenda that runs counter to Canada’s national interests and liberal democratic values.

Advance their agenda

The obvious 800-pound gorilla in Canadian politics — as it is in most of the western democracies — is the ideology of Islamism dressed as religion and its adherents skilfully exploiting multiculturalism to advance their agenda, whether it be importing Shariah (Islamic laws) or undermining Canada’s support for Israel.

Multiculturalism as a doctrine stipulates all cultures are of equal merit and deserve equal treatment. What remain unspecified — perhaps deliberately — in this formula are the criteria by which the equality of cultures is assessed.

Moreover, since the multicultural doctrine is untenable and easily falsified, it can only be sustained by the heavy-handed political correctness of the Canadian state promoting this balderdash at much expense and increasing public dismay.

The idea that Canada has been multicultural since the first Europeans arrived on its shores is a recent invention. It was devised out of necessity and bad faith to mitigate the challenge that Quebec nationalism and separatism presented to English Canada.

It could be said that Canada with its aboriginal population was multicultural. But once the English and the French engaged to wrestle control over this vast country, the Canada that eventually emerged as a dominion was bicultural and bilingual.

Immigration made Canada multi-ethnic. The success of modern, liberal democratic and multi-ethnic Canada rests upon the indispensable strength, culture and history of the founding peoples — English and French, Protestants and Catholics — and the institutions they built that would take in immigrants from around the world.

Diminishes history

Multiculturalism is a diminution of Canada’s founding history. It diminishes the vitality and largeness of the political culture that has accommodated a multitude of ethnicities within its borders, while it fails in bringing to immigrants — especially of non-European origin — a compensating increase in appreciation for those values that went into building Canada as a model of civility.

Dosanjh has done a much-needed service to his country. It is now for the rest of us to engage in a constructive discussion on how to roll back multiculturalism, this doctrine of divisiveness, for the love of Canada.

What is special about Canada. No nation-state can withstand institutionalized multiculturalism.

Multiculturalism is a foolish attempt by the misinformed to make themselves appear normal. What a bunch of balkanized losers.

Try Vancouver. Head to downtown at lunchtime, and it’s like L.A., you will almost never see a white person. Come night-time, the streets are packed with them. Toronto is already done for. They’re starting to look like Detroit..

Somewhere along the line we took not discriminating people on this basis of skin color, to mean not discriminating people because of their culture and values.

Multiculturalism fails Canada

I guess Multiculturalism has failed (and is failing every
country) There is a reason why countries are different.
And flooding all of them with the left wing muliticulty crap
has never done anything good.
Yes we all “love you”. So if iám nice to you, you will be nice to me too.
The only problem is most of this people don´t love us the same way. But then again this is hardly news.
“our” politicians commited suicide of nations years ago.
Do they care? NO. Again we all love each other.
This is why there are no problems /s

This isn't a very good article, it's paraphrasing of Dosanjh's article leaves a very incorrect impression on who he is and what he stands for.

For comparison, here's a link to his original article link

The SUN article says "Dosanjh contended minority communities — immigrants of non-European origin — threaten the social fabric of Canada by an obsession with injustices in their “homelands” in the recent or distant past."

While his actual words were:

"Today, our society's cohesion is threatened by some members of many minority communities obsessively focused on injustices in their "homelands" in the recent or distant past. Too much emphasis is placed on the differences that keep us apart from each other, even those that took place in the ancient past, elsewhere in the world. There is diminishing emphasis on commonalities and values that bind us."

One of the obvious operative words there is 'some' members. Dosanjh's article also give specific examples and exactly why he believes what he's writing.

Yeah skin color doesn't matter in the US except for affirmative action, ninority business set asides, the Black and Hispanic and Asian caucuses in Congress, the Census Bureau using race and ethinicity to count people including the category non-Hispanic whites, admission to colleges, employment, etc.

Multiculturalism and diversity are destroying this country as well as Canada. The U.S. adds one international migrant (net) every 34 seconds. Immigrants account for one in 8 U.S. residents, the highest level in more than 80 years. In 1970 it was one in 21; in 1980 it was one in 16; and in 1990 it was one in 13. In a decade, it will be one in 7, the highest it has been in our history. And by 2050, one in 5 residents of the U.S. will be foreign-born. Currently, 1.6 million legal and illegal immigrants settle in the country each year; 350,000 immigrants leave each year, resulting in net immigration of 1.25 million. Since 1970, the U.S. population has increased from 203 million to 309 million, i.e., over 100 million. In the next 40 years, the population will increase by 130 million. Three-quarters of the increase in our population since 1970 and the projected increase will be the result of immigration.

Going to be as frank as I can be.

Atlantic Canadians work on their lands, cultivate their own, fish their own...no talk of immigrants coming here to do the work Atlantic Canadians don’t want to do...for the most part.

Open season for illegal immigrant work in Ontario, Alberta and BC, for the most part.

Having had the opportunity to work in the oil fields in Northern Alberta for the past 10 years, I’ve had the privilege to see the demographics literally change before my eyes.
Bout 12-20 years ago, you had the Lebanese population start moving to where the money was, where the oil was. Opening semi-traditional restaurants and driving cabs.

Then, about 5 years later, the Somalians came and started invading the cab industry. When they grew tired of that, they went to the local union halls screaming racism and demanding the halls to open their books.

These thousands, that had NO TRAINING, WORK EXPERIENCE or LANGUAGE SKILLS were signed into our glorious union halls with a small fee of course. So now, with the help of our lax entry laws and workpermit laws, the local unions that bowed under pressure and Western Union, they’re( immigrants ) sending hundreds of thousands of dollars back “ home “ every month, smiles on their faces.

Meanwhile, MEN, hard men, working men, waiting and wanting the chance to work because the fisheries are going to shyte...because our lumber industry is non present now...have to sit in line, wait and hope to get a name hire for a job that might last 2 months.

We’re done in Canada, we’ve lost our way...for the most part.

Multiculturalism works when there is a strong, confident, non-bullying dominant culture (as was the US until the late 60s), where minorities are positively confident about themselves and their culture and know that the majority are confident enough not to devolve into persecutors.

Islam is not a culture and hence does not fit into this mould -- when it is in majority, it is not confident and "bullies" i.e. persecutes the minorities and when it is a minority, it cannot let live and let live (as it wants to dominate and destroy).

Multi-culturism in Canada, has been a abysmal failure, what you have is giant ethnic enclaves, a complete lack of assimilation into Canadian culture. This results in stuff like pro-LTTE Tamil terrorist supporters blocking highways in Ontario and critical hospitals while the cowardly police and mayor do nothing.

I encourage all Freepers to check the Fraser Institute’s phenomenal study called ‘The Effects of Mass Immigration’ for how this mess came about.

Thought i’d explained that the Somalis were the troublemakers here.
As for the Lebanese, mixed, quite a few Christians but mostly Muslim. A few Hezbollah ex-pats. The Lebs own most of the fast food joint and 2 out of 3 cab companies here now.
They like to keep to themselves while Somalians seem to impose.

A country that strives for multiculturalism is destined to fail. Multiculturalism assumes that all cultures are morally equivalent. So a “multicultural” socialist elite will wink at honor killings in some South Asian communties, female genitilia mutilation in an African communities, and human sacrifice in a voodoo communities, then decree an all female fire dept in all major cities to address past “injustices”. All this while giving away lawfully owned private property to “more deserving” political supporters, and of course, make any sensible discourse impossible by enforcing mind numbing political correctness.

The very first casualties of this silliness will be individual freedom and any memory of the values that gave the country its national identity.

Then the communists, fascists, anarchists, Al Qaeda, bull dikes, and road warriors fight to the death over whatever is left.

LOL. Stop with your phony strawmen and holier than thou attitude. My point was that we have institutionalized racism in this country. The government discriminates by law against people based on their skin color and ethnicity. And our legislators have formed cliques based on race and ethnicity.

I would prefer to live in a color blind society where people are treated as individuals and not groups of victims. The reality is quite different, e.g., over 90% of blacks vote Dem.

FYI: By 2023 half of the children 18 and under in this country will be minorities as classified by the USG. And by 2042 half of the country will be minorities.

Exactly! Only whites are expected to be Borg everyone else not so much and this idea that race and culture are mutually exclusive is also extremely bogus.

Sikh extremists are not alone in sheltering behind the politics of multiculturalism, then pushing their agenda that runs counter to Canada’s national interests and liberal democratic values.

This is absolutely true and it is happening in every Western country in the world and done by every race group. I also would further suggest it is not just 'extermist'(although I am not sure exactly what that means) either. Whites in the US have largely become deracinated and shamed into allowing the very same thing here. This whole AZ law thing is a case and point. No racial profiling? Really? That is absurd. The invaders in that that state are almost 100% exclusively Hispanic. Why would you not use that as part of the criteria?
