Brazil produces almost exactly what they consume about 2 1/2 million barrels per day.
The problem is we need an overall assessment of energy.
We need oil shale, oil sands, nukes, Alaska can be bigger player, the baaken find is enough oil for years and years but we aren't getting to it fast enough,and once again if we drill closer in the gulf its easier to manage.

IN Alaska alone the existing pipeline has about 7-8 years before it has to be shut down.
Once production gets below 300,000 barrels per day it will be shut down. A 70 mile long connector could be built to a new field in the area but little is happening right now that I know about. the new filed could bump production back up to one million barrels per day again. We need it bad.
I guess the bigger question is how long will Americans enjoy paying $5.00 a gallon for gas. Will that eclipse the thought of an oil spill? We get 25% of our oil needs from the Gulf.

What will happen is that Mary Landrieu has discovered that the oil companies have a spill fund that is worth 1.6 billion. That will become a DNC slush fund,they will take it all.

Then they will start in dismantling BP. No telling how many billions they can suck out of BP even with all the lawyers duking it out.

In the end they will once again get billions and billions to buy more votes with which will keep these lousy bastards around even longer.
