Chicago police offer up $100 per weapon

CHICAGO -- The Chicago police department wants your guns.

The department is offering up to $100 for weapons handed over during its Gun Turn In on Saturday. The event will be held at 22 locations across the city.

Police will give a prepaid credit card for each weapon that's turned in. They're giving $100 for each assault weapon, $75 for guns and $10 for BB guns, air guns and replica guns.

Officials say police won't ask any questions about the guns or the people who are turning them in. Police say all guns that are turned in will be destroyed.

Guns can always be turned in at police stations, but to get the credit cards, they must be turned in on May 8.

So the youth gangs are going to sell their weapons to the police?

Why destroy the guns? Some say that some of these gangs are better armed than the police. Maybe the police can upgrade their arsenal through this program.

Silly cops!
There aren't any guns in Chicago!
They're illegal...........

How about allowing law abiding citizens own and carry guns, as provided for under the 2nd Amendment?

THAT would help make criminals less brazen!

Exactly! It’s such a joke, but it’s basically the lead story on the news for the past 3 days.... with the exception of all the murders that have been going on.

Where did this come from?

One wonders if gun confiscation might be the next focus (post November elections, of course) focus of the (alleged) Obama administration.

The cards are turned back into the police and the fingerprints are taken off them, they all persons who handled the card are put on a list of weapons owners? Sucks that the store clerks at WalMart and Sports Chalet are dragged onto the list unknowingly, but that’s “colateral damage” and acceptable to the LEO mafia?

Typical libs touchy feeley...... this is kinda like wetting yourself wearing dark trwosers. It gives you a nice warm feeling but nobody seems to notice.

Gun control is like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars.

What’s the difference between an assault weapon and a gun?? The way it looks? haha

I’ll give ‘em $101. That’s a good deal—for me!

This is how it works....The gang sells their $100 cards to “dealers” at 10% discount....then take the money and get them a AK-47. Everybody is happy.

It would be smarter to pay everyone $100 to buy a gun or take one from the bin of freebies.

The problem with these things is that they always try to limit you.. I mean, they're offering $75 per gun, you bring in a hundred old clunkers which you've taken what useful parts there are off of them, and they say things like ‘Umm, there's a limit of five per person.’ But such rules need to be announced ahead of time.

Meanwhile, you go this line full of people who are already sick of waiting, who you already know how much they're expecting for their guns. And typically, there's a few nice old muzzle loaders, a Winchester or two, sometimes some nice old Colts. A hundred dollars, just a few minutes time in the motor home to fill out the paperwork, and for some reason, that guy with the hundred junk guns is STILL arguing it out with the cops, holding up the line...

Can I get a hundred bucks for a super-soaker?

Anybody else notice that even bottom of the line air rifles spiked in price recently? A Crosman 760 went up 40% at Wal-Mart, and there seemed to be a shortage of pellets.

Better idea, use the money and buy a few mini guns with enough ammo to demolish a few hundred city blocks. There, problem solved.

This is a head-scratcher. Who’s gonna turn in a $500 semi-automatic rifle in exchange for $100?

I've also heard of people walking the line, performing "safety checks" and offering more than the blood money for worthwhile guns, say $150 or $200 in this case. Wouldn't work in IL because they don't have unregulated face-to-face sales between private owners, IIRC. Sometimes it's grandma bringing in Gramps old gun cause she's not a gun person and there's no reason for it to be under the bed anymore if she has neither the knowledge nor inclination to use it, and you can get a nice gun for cheap plus saving it from the anti-rights nanny brigade.
