US Census Workers Knocking on Your Neighbors’ Doors, Looking for Snitches in Memphis
big gov't ^ | 5/14/10 | SusanAnne Hiller

Just when we thought flag@whitehouse.gov–which appears to be alive and well when clicked–was scary and invasive–it seems the Obama administration’s Census Bureau has outdone itself. A US census worker, driving a metallic gray Ford Taurus-type car, has been reported to be combing through the Memphis, TN suburb of Germantown knocking on doors asking people for information on their neighbors.

Because if you sent the form in and it was incomplete, you might as well have not done it. If you refuse to answer anymore, so be it. But they will still come to your house. And sometimes it’s just a matter of getting crossed in the mail. We’ve had some who mailed it in and it wasn’t put in the system before the addresses were assigned out.

Another thing that irks me a little is the assumption that if a person works for the Census, then they are an ACORN employee or something. That has been the fear for a long time, but I assure you that it is not the case.

That maybe the case in some locals especially where the make up is heavily democrats. However I know several people who are working for the Census and I can assure that isn’t the case with them. The top dog for this area I know personally and have spent hours with him. He’s about as anti Obama as one can get.

Take care....

Actually they limit what postal carriers can be asked.

Well, the census worker came to my house and accused me of not returning my form. I hotly exclaimed that I had returned it on April 1.

We just had the exact same thing happen to us last week. The girl showed up just as we were leaving the house. She introduced herself as she walked up and told us that she had to ask us a few questions. I told her we had sent it in early April. She then tells me that it must have gotten lost in the mail and that it would just take about ten minutes. I told her that we already did our part and we had to leave as we were already late.

So she follows us to our car while pointedly informing us that we are required by Federal law to comply. I again pointed out that we already complied when we delivered it to the US Post office. She told us that she would be back. It really bothers me though that they ask all of these race questions and such but not even one line asking citizenship.

The first enumeration, in 1790, included very probing questions about "property" ~ particular the number of slaves you owned, their names, ages, etc.

Of course that was the one done by the Founding Fathers so what did they know about counting heads.

BTW, the other evening I was looking for a number ~ the population of Great Britain in 1775 ~ to use in a discussion on FR. Intriguingly UK didn't have a census ~ it had partial counts, and estimates, and various claims advanced by the parties, but not the real deal.

The estimate of UK population varied from 3.5 million to 7.0 million at that time. The United States of America ALSO had a population that was estimated at something like the same figure (depending on who got counted and where).

Parliament had no representation from America.

Having a census was a big deal to the Revolutionary Founding Fathers. Not having a census was an equally big deal to the Tories in London!

UK finally had a regular census in 1841 ~ Parliament was transformed in the next election.

Having a full census, including the enumeration of property and conditions would seem to be a fundamental Civil Right which no real Conservative should reject.

There's a fundamental question USPS carriers know that virtually no one else ever knows ~ if there's an empty dwelling unit, was it occupied April 1, or was it vacant.

You are exactly right! That’s a point I’ve been trying to make here for a few weeks now. In researching family trees, I can tell you that the information requested in the early 1800’s was far more extensive. They even asked where you born, where your parents were born, your occupation, parents occupation, etc...

The only thing they ask now is name, age and race. Oh, and if you own your home free and clear, own with a mortgage or rent. I think that is for statistical purposes though and isn’t so important that they would send someone to your house if you left it off the form.

Yep, ‘cept your #1 took place just about a year ago.

I think that varies based on population density, or how long it takes to survey a particular area. In my area of small towns and rural areas, most of that work was done in the second half of 2009.

The Census 2000 long form would have been fairly irritating to fill out (not sure what is used for 2000), but I’ve always found the census short forms far less intrusive and irritating than filing an income tax return.

Actually, I'm referring to the first field work. The first field workers for Census 2010 were hired in May of 2009 in my area. There was probably some regional or area office work being done before that.

I’ll ask you. Do you consider the person who pays you to be your boss?

Here’s some news to inspire real confidence in where the Census office work is being done (roll eyes):

Exactly. I told the census worker that too. I told him I should have answered HUMAN to the race questions. I told him that my husband wasn’t any way hispanic, unless he counted Italian. At that point my husband showed up, so the census man could actually see him. Then I couldn’t get going because my husband talked his ear off for the next 45 min.

Can’t remember which census — perhaps back in 1960, or 1970 — I had to answer how many toilets I had and how many TVs.

I’m afraid many offices of the federal government have had contact with Muslims and Muslim organizations who support terrorism in various ways, and the White House has been no exception under any of our recent presidents.

The standard for Muslim organizations seems to be innocent until proven guilty at least three times.

I think there are a certain number of select houses that get a “long form” census. This is for infrastructure data.

Out here in the country, I have two neighbors. Both of them would tell the census worker to buzz off.

I would do likewise for them.

We don’t take kindly to intruders.

FWIW, I feel a little sympathy for the census guys working around here. Most of the homes cannot be seen from the street. Very few mailboxes as the USPS sucks around here and most folks have PO Boxes. As a result, only a few driveways have street numbers.

Good luck census guys.

What does who pays me have to do with being a jerk? And your question posed to the census worker about ‘who pays you’ served no other purpose than to inflate your ego. It sounds to me like you lack any sort of authority and so you have to make yourself feel better by making yourself “boss” to every public employee you come across.
