Magistrate told off for branding boys who desecrated cathedral 'absolute scum'

Once upon a time in England, these two boys would have appeared in the Magistrate's Court, and then found themselves strapped down across a wooden frame work while a bundle of birch rods were applied to their bare backsides with force by a Police Constable half a dozen times.

And far from making an official complaint, when they got home, their mothers (and even more likely their fathers) probably would have added to the experience with a belt or similar object.

Nowadays, Magistrate's can't even scold them properly. And mother's aim their anger at the court, rather than at their errant child.

Actually, I was thinking the Magistrate was a bit 'harsh' (actually psycho) because I thought "branding" meant branding (of the red-hot poker variety)... After reading what the boys did I was almost thinking that they had the 'branding' coming (although I was thinking that it was still a bit overly harsh for my taste) ...
Then I realized that 'branding' just meant calling the hooligans names... Sheesh, the Magistrate gets 'told off' for that?

The police said, “They were known to us.” So, the little scum have a record. They got off with a slap on the wrist for all the damage they did. The only thing the judge should be called on is why he didn’t make them pay to replace the cross and the books and to clean up their mess.

The boys, who are both from Darwen, carried out the attack after following a group into the cathedral one afternoon out of curiosity.

After the hearing last month, Police Constable Dave Hall said: 'They are both stupid teenage boys. It's possible they've no issues with Jewish people and are just uneducated.

One can’t help but wonder what the consequences would be if these boys tried the same antics in a mosque.

Perhaps he should have couched his disdain in legalese and parsed his judgment thus, "While I am unable to ascertain whether you are such in total insofar as I can only see those portions of you which face me, I am confident in pronouncing that part of you that does face me to be scum. It would indeed be inappropriate for me to comment upon the balance of your parts which are invisible to me, however if you boys would indulge me and spin around I'd be game at taking a stab at it."

Isn't that the point? Unnamed "Boy A" and "Boy B" almost certainly attend mosque, that's why they did what they did in a Christian church.
