An 80-year-old Chicago man shot and killed an armed man who broke into his two-story house in a pre-dawn home invasion Wednesday on the city's West Side.
At about 5:20 a.m., the homeowner and his wife, also in her 80s, discovered the intruder entering their home by a back door. In a struggle at their doorstep, the intruder fired his revolver but was struck in the chest and died of his wound, police said.
"It's a good thing they had a gun, or they might be dead," said Curtis Thompson, who lives next door to the couple, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Neighbors described the elderly couple, who both walk with canes, as pillars of the community in Garfield Park, where home invasions have been all too frequent.
Their neighbor, Shaquite Johnson, told MyFoxChicago that the two are "heroes" for fighting off the attacker and that the shooting means there is "one less criminal" walking the streets.
"They don't bother no one, so why would anyone do that to them?" she said.

I'm sure Hizzoner will have the Chicago Thug Department trot right over there to arrest the homeowner and offer to stick a bayonet up his butt.
Huh? The intruder fired his revolver but was hit in the chest?
Will Daley prosecute or shove a weapon up the homeowners rear for protecting himself.
Thank God they did have a gun. Does it seem like we’ve all gone back to the wild west lately?
I read a great write up over at cracked.com (yes, the same) about how wild west shootouts were virtually non-existent. They even showed evidence that the most number of homicides in Deadwood was 4 in one year. Just... 4.
Further proof that an armed society is a polite society!
Splash one bogey.
So, instead of banning guns, Daly ought to be handing them out along with shooting lessons for everyone.
Sorry someone died. Celebration that it wasn’t the victim. Great Gun control on the shooters part. Thanks for the citation on non violent societies.
‘and that the shooting means there is “one less criminal” walking the streets.’
And one less Obama voter!
Better listen up Mayor Shortshanks!!!!!
Yeah, I agree with that assessment. I believe everyone should be given a stipend upon the birth of a child to purchase that child an “heirloom” weapon that can be handed to them on their 18th or 21st birthday.
Armed societies are consistently shown to be non-violent.
Fortunately for Daley, the Obama voter will continue to vote, several times each election.
“...the intruder fired his revolver but was struck in the chest and died of his wound, police said.”
Makes it sound like the guy shot himself. Poorly writen article. No mention of the home owners weapon other than “gun”
Maybe that’s how the police report should read.
Well, whether it was a 22 or a 12 gauge, it was gun enough and under "control".
did i miss the mention of the brutha, or sorry, the late perp?
1. They were old, and therefore more vulnerable prey, and...
2. This is Chicago, and they weren't supposed to have a gun!
I think that’s called the ‘backwards bullet.’ They have a nasty habit of looping back on their owners similar to pitbulls.
I always wish these stories would say what these guys last words were. It just leaves you wondering.
A solid piece of work!
(or some variation)
If you would like to help out with the late criminals funeral.
Send his family a cup of dirt.
Sounds like the plot of a Clint Eastwood movie. Was the guy’s name Walt Kowalski? FWIW, Eastwood himself turns 80 tomorrow!
I thought it might be just me...the passage makes little sense. The guy fired his gun but was killed by the older man, I guess. Who writes this stuff?
I would like to see reporters interviewing democrat politicians and ask what kind of penalty the homeowner should get for having a gun in his home.
I wonder when Shortshanks will file charges against the guy for having a gun in his house?
No need, they already have a whole bag full.
Eastwood himself turns 80 tomorrow!”
He sure looks good for 80.
Paul Newman looked real good until the last few months when the cancer ate at him.
I think they should give all gang members shooting lessons and target practice so they’ll cut down on the number of accidental shooting by stray bullets. First lesson, do not hold your guy sideways or upside down. Second lesson, after loading the gun, look down the barrel as you carefully squeeze the trigger to see how much travel it has.
In a struggle at their doorstep, the intruder fired his revolver but was struck in the chest and died of his wound, police said.
True. The reporting is either less than optimal, or they didn’t have all the information.
Buy that man a beer! Heck,a case!
A high-profile Chicago attorney has already stepped forward offering to represent the man pro bono if he faces charges for possessing a weapon.
“Self-defense isn’t just a right, it’s a duty,” said attorney Joel Brodsky. “If this man is prosecuted for saving his own life it’s not just a travesty, it’s justice turned inside out.”
I just love a happy ending.
Eastwood gets a big salute from Turner Classic Movies on Monday, May 31, with a full day of his films capped by the premiere of "The Eastwood Factor," a documentary written and directed by film critic and historian Richard Schickel.
