While those serving time in the Santa Fe County jail can't wait to get out, federal immigration officials are just trying to get in.
But the jail's director contends U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities racially profile inmates, and until that stops the welcome mat outside the facility will continue to read: No pasarán.
ICE officials insist they are not racially profiling anyone. And they say Santa Fe's refusal to allow them to interview prisoners is hindering their efforts to determine which ones might be here illegally.
ICE spokeswoman Leticia Zamarripa says it would make sense for the jail to contact federal immigration authorities when it comes to some illegal immigrants who are about to be released or bond out, but that the jail is under no legal requirement to do so.
"They're not violating the law," she said. "But it's in the community's best interest for them to contact us. That way we don't have a convicted murderer or convicted rapist out on the street."

Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry, just this month, implemented a new policy under which the immigration status of anyone arrested by city police is checked by ICE when they are booked at the prisoner transport station.
But in Santa Fe, jail practices and law enforcement policies remain immigrant-friendly to the extent of shielding many of those arrested from immigration authorities.
That frustrates ICE officials, who say that not only are they not allowed to interview inmates at the Santa Fe County jail, but the lockup doesn't always honor ICE "detainers" for inmates who may have violated immigration law.

Albuquerque, OTOH, elected a Republican mayor earlier this year who reversed the previous Democrats sanctuary city policy and now requires an immigration check of all who are arrested for crimes.
Bunch of liberal loons.
Santa Fe is where extremist, liberal lunatics go once they finally go over the edge and think that they’ve become Indians.
There are billions of dollars at stake with the drug cartels and human trafficing. I’m sure they have greased the skids to the point that many are willing to sell out the safety and wellbeing of their fellow Americans.
Failure to obey/enforce the law is grounds to fire these bastards.
Cost them their jobs and let’s see how dedicated to the cause they really are.
Arizona wants to collect illegals for ICE, because ICE complains they are too busy to look for them themselves, and ICE tells them to F*** off.
ICE wants to go into New Mexico jails and look for illegals THERE, and New Mexico tells ICE to F*** off.
Can’t anyone see why we need to get the liberals out of power? At every level? Federal, state and local?
Now that is humor in a jugular vein.
This is more than liberal lunacy. There are vast amounts of money involved in drugs and human trafficking. Someone has got to local officials with a whole lot of money.
Damn, that was funny.
If these cops don’t want to do their job and ENFORCE THE LAW there are lots of unemployed Americans that will gladly replace them.
NM list PING!
(The NM list is available on my FR homepage for anyone to use. Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list.)
“But the jail’s director contends U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities racially profile inmates, and until that stops the welcome mat outside the facility will continue to read: No pasarán.”
That’s a pretty odd statement since most all prisons and jails divide and house inmates based on race. Prisoners, even if they aren’t racists, tend to stick with their own races. The jailers encourage this racial segregation because they’d have constant riots if they didn’t. Jailers “racially profile” on a daily basis.
Ping!
Thanks for the ping (I think.... hate to read something like this, just before bed.)
I hope we can get someone that prefers America and Americans to Mexico and Mexicans in the Governor’s office soon.
The City of Santa Fe is beyond help, beyond redemption, as are some of the legislative districts, but if we can soon get someone besides a carpetbagging opportunist who maintains his emotional allegiance to his native Mexico as governor, maybe this state won’t completely self-destruct.
Sometimes it just feels like we’re fighting a losing battle. Maybe I need a couple of weeks of no news to recharge my batteries.
Now you can see why under the AZ law private citizens can sue if the authorities refuse to do their duty. The Santa Fe County Jail is a sanctuary.
Moscow on the Rio Grande was my description of Santa Fe....
The people that run Santa Fe are such idiots I doubt anyone had to bribe them. They are liberal nut cases to the max and truly believe in open borders and amnesty for all the downtrodden illegals. They also want their housekeepers, nannies, and gardeners to be cheap and subservient.
It really is liberal lunacy. Santa Fe is little Hollywood or at least it tries real hard. Just do a quick read of this gossip blog-
