This was a headline on my embarq home page (my webmail)

"BP fumbled its latest underwater experiment with the wild Gulf gusher..."

Our little guy is getting quite the reputation, it seems.

BP is currently drilling two relief wells from the side of the current well. They are drilling down into the current bore at approx 18000 feet, and don’t expect to mate up until aug-sep time frame.

At that point they will use the relief wells to seal the current well from below.

for now they are trying to put a cap on this well to capture as much oil as possible.

They are cleaning up the snipped area with a saw from Ocean 2. I think they may have a great chance of doing what they plan to do with the cap!

I have been pulling for the guys to do a good job for the last few days. The operators of all those ROVs and the crane operator for Jaws do need to be rewarded. They have been tenacious and never gave up!

We need a screen grab of this to put on a T-shirt and caption it “Obama’s Legacy.”

I was thinking more of a T-shirt with an oil soaked
albatross hung around the neck and
“You got Obama, all I got was the bird.”

Yep, it was awesome and one for the history books! The light flaring on the volumes of oil, gas and mud enveloping the ROVs looked like blinding explosions and when you could finally make out Chomp, the little ROVs still held him in position.

I can see God's hand all over this...

;)

I wonder if Fumbles and T. Rex will now have to join the Screen Actors Guild. That’d have to include Saw and Cut and Jaws, too.

James Cameron, noted blowout expert, has been imported from Hollllllllywoooood.

From Drudge:

Master Director Cameron says BP turned down offer to help... 'Those morons don't know what they're doing'...

The WKRG feed has a counter that shows # of viewers.

It went from under 5,000 to over 6,900 in seconds.

That's pretty funny right there.

Try these various cameras. Not all work at the same time.

My analysis is that there is a tear on the right side that might be the failed diamond saw cut. It appears to be just above or perhaps at the point where the flange was welded to the pipe. The seal will be effected below that on the flange body

The current effort seems to be to make vertical cuts that can be folded inward slightly to allow the cap to fit over the pipe stubout and in good close contact with the slightly tapered flange. the slight taper of the flange body will permit a tight and regular seal.

The ultimate result will be to plug the blowout well using two relieve bores currently ongoing. Until they are complete the other efforts are to capture as much of the oil as possible.

Cool.

I'm pleasantly surprised that my idea was, basically, the right one.

I thought of drilling sideways into the riser pipe along time ago to relieve some of the pressure...but I think everything has to be done evenly so it would mean drilling two holes simultaneously...

The next bad thought is "shear" on ony one of those sides could wreck a huge section....

Go to the following and on the right side is a section entitled “in this section”. Click each section and you’ll find graphics of some of the equipment, etc. It gives you some prespective of the size of the equipment involved, the technical expertise, etc.
