You mean including the naughty ones the mods deleted?
Oops. I guess I should apply for a W.H. position counting new job hires.
That’s ok, we all understand this has been a long and grueling and at times thrilling thread so it is hard to keep track. This thread could be a script for a sci fi movie better than 90 + % of those coming out in the last 20 years. And it looks like the thread has finally passed on to the other side, it was a good run.
Are you saying we’re done??
I’m not sure, it’s entirely up to the other posters and how long they want to keep the updates going on the progress with the oil collection and stuff. Obviously, the thread has slowed way down since when they were trying to saw the pipe and having problems. It may keep going for a while, but soon I presume it will inevitable die out. Even threads as intense as this one don’t last forever anyway.
The video feeds refuse to run from my motel room hook-up
Was anything going on today?
BP America Update: From 12:00am to 12:00pm on June 7th, a total of 7,541 barrels of oil were collected and 15 million cubic feet of natural gas was flared. Operations during this period were stable.
Has anyone seen an updated estimate on how much oil and natural gas they think are leaking? I'd be interested in knowing what percentage of each are being captured.
I wish I knew, but where I work the computers don’t work so well so the live feed doesn’t work so I have not been able to keep up to date on the situation on the ground so to speak. Of course, unlike so many other people I realize I would not have been able to tell anyway simply fromt he live feed how much is coming out. I do wonder if any progress was made in removing the extra pipes like I heard they were trying to do.
looks like the feeds have been turned off.
Oh boy, that could be because something very bad happened or even because the whole syystem got blown apart or something. Hopefulyl it is because they are getting a new idea ready instead.
ALthough if something broke or something has gone seriously wrong since last night there almost certainly would have been a breaking news update by now, so maybe someone here has found one if that is what happened.
Looks like there are five ROVs in the water right now. Last time I checked (few hours ago) two others were surfacing.
They are back on.
I think we sould keep it up until either
1. We beat the thread record
2. Obama kicks the appropriate ass.
3. He plugs a hole
Whichever comes first. Obviously the answer is #1 because he cannot kick his own ass and #3 will never happen..
Dude, the undead thread is like 65,000 posts. We’ll all be dead or in reeducation camps long before we get that far.
You are right. If we pass the undead thread we’ll be dead. It’s in the rules. 3 choices and all of them have a tarball’s chance in hell.
I just looked at underwater feeds. Earlier, most of the fins on the cap were showing and it seemed the amount spilling was minimal, but now It is very mad and gushing violently. The Gusher seems to be very wee-wee’d up that Obama is looking for A$$, and Its anger is showing. Maybe the Gusher wants a human sacrifice. Does anyone have any suggestions?
These people are worshiping the wrong object. That rock is not angry! The Gusher is!
is back up again showing some activity.
I see the cap moving about some. Are they trying to replace it or are they going to put a bigger cap over this one?
I see that too.
The entire LMRP seems to lift up a bit from time to time.
Don’t know what is happening with that.
Last night ta robot had a claw-held instrument of some sort it was a small yellow device and he was going up and down all over the BOP like he was examining it for something.
something else going on now...
this robot is probing the ocean floor like he is looking for something.
different bot now...
LMRP almost completely visible in this view:
Is it just me or has the flow lessened substantially since mid week? I think much more of the "fins" are in view and I even get a glimpse of the main body of the LMRP from time to time.
At the moment...this camera:
appears to be looking at the rig wreckage.
The different camera views of the top of the BOP and the LMRP
shows there is much more flow on what I think is the ‘north’ side
than there is on the ‘south’ side, that shows nearly no leakage.
This shows why they were so concerned about how plumb the BOP was.
Your opinion on what we are looking at here?

Watch and be patient as the camera pans around.
Something strange here:
Are they trying to level it up?
They are taking much more sophisticated reading now. Earlier this week they had a steel brush taking the paint off of various surfaces so they could take readings directly on the metal. I believe they may have been trying to get acurate flow measurements.
I would love for BP to show a map of what’s on the bottom. They have various pipes and containers set on the bottom that they go between. At times it looks like they are trying to salvage part of the original piping. I would still like to know what the plans are for the two or three additional caps that are sitting in containers on the bottom. I wonder if they think they may get a better seal with a different sized cap.
I agree with the fins being more visible on one side, however, I don’t think the cap was ever on straight so it can be decieving. The view from the other side the fins are barely sticking out.
“I would love for BP to show a map of whats on the bottom.”
I can’t imagine how they can keep up with where everything is
unless without something like that on hand.
Doesn’t look like it. The view from Enterprise 2 shows the cap apparently skewed about 20 degrees from straight up. I don’t know how you could reposition the cap with all that pipe attached to the top of it.
Some of the feeds show what looks like co-ordinates but they are not formatted in any way I am familiar with. Anyone know what system that is?
What you said makes me wonder...
Is the weight of the pipe being borne by the package?
Or is the pipe suspended from above?
(is it hanging there; or is it standing there?)
Are you talking about the heads-up displays on some of the bot cams?
Yes, I tried to figure those out too.
Some make sense and some don’t.
It is apparently some version of UTM.
It’s all suspended. I watched an ROV making an inspection where it floated down the entire length of the pipe (no, I didn’t watch it all). Still, it’s a large, rigid pipe for a long, long way. It would be tough to move the cap.
If they needed to swap out and try a different cap design,
I guess they could lift the entire system off from up above.
But then, at that point, I don’t know if they would have to
attach the new cap to the existing pipe,
or run an entire new pipe down.
Any comments on whether the repacement is better or worse?
It is very puzzling to me.
Sometimes when you look at the live feeds
it seems like almost all of the leak is being captured.
Other times it looks just like it always has.
Just how big is the BOP stack? Nothing is there to compare it with for size.
The riser is 460 tons I believe.
Some kind of heavy lifting involving shackles and chains going on here:
BTTT: This is a good feed of what is going on right now: http://mfile.akamai.com/97892/live/reflector:44287.asx?bkup=44668
They are going to be very busy for the next several days.
Looks like they are about to seat the new cap.
