vehicle and were probing its interior with a robot, according to video from CNN affilliate WTSP.

Police responded to an unknown situation just after 6 p.m. The gate has been closed for more than three hours now.

While it's not clear what is going on, people close to the scene say the bomb squad is there and they're dismantling an SUV.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY (Bay News 9) — A traffic crash early Monday forced the closing of the main gates at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa.

According to base officials, a vehicle crashed into the main gates at Dale Mabry Higway. Officials rerouted traffic while repairs were done to the gate.

Traffic had to enter the base through gates at Bayshore Boulevard or MacDill Avenue. Dale Mabry entry was restored by 11 a.m.

Officials said four people were in a Dodge Intrepid that approached the base at 12:45 a.m.

Security officials, suspecting the driver was drunk, asked the individual to turn off the vehicle.

The driver then reversed his vehicle, hitting another car behind it, before proceeding unauthorized through the gate.

Gate security barriers were activated successfully, stopping the vehicle.

strange.. my wife and I discussed this just the other day. I traveled to Tampa recently and was able to get on base pretty easily in a vehicle w/o a DOD sticker, with no search of the rental car.
The security seemed pretty lax considering what they have on that facility. I’m not surprised this happened there.

I suspect the military uniforms were probably meant to make the people at the checkpoint wave them through thinking they were military - not realizing, of course, that even military actually have to show ID. This type of checkpoint running is a very Middle Eastern tactic. It will be interesting to find out more about these people (if we’re allowed to do so).

Base officials haven't heard that it was a planned attack.

A News Channel 8 reporter on scene at the base saw at least 13 loaded rifle magazines and two pistol magazines in a bag.

Authorities also found military clothing and other military-style equipment in the grayish blue Honda CRV driven by the suspects. No explosives were found.
