Lou Reed's on the list. Junior Brown isn't.

Silly list.

His response was, “When you live in a capitalistic society, the currency of the dissemination of information goes through capitalistic channels. Would Noam Chomsky object to his works being sold at Barnes & Noble? No, because that’s where people buy their books. We’re not interested in preaching to just the converted. It’s great to play abandoned squats run by anarchists, but it’s also great to be able to reach people with a revolutionary message, people from Granada Hills to Stuttgart.”

I had GA on the floor for a reasonable price, close enough for me.

Yes other then the other great guitar solos by Gilmore the second rift in Confortably numb is probably one of the best blues and rock rifts ever.. And the one used in the wall was even better... Going to see Roger Waters in Dec but wish it was the whole Floyd...

My personal favorite Floyd album is "Animals", where Gilmour's solo on "Pigs" starts with one note held, bent, vibratoed, and bent some more for about 8-10 bars while the chord progression changes around it.

Animals is my favorite too, but my favorite moment is on "Dogs", on the solo just after Waters' vocals.

"...I will say Jack White gets a lot of credit for being a true rock star who insists on mythology instead of being just a guy in a band that you know a lot about."

Ah, but this list isn't supposed to be about the Top 50 "rock stars", it's the Top 50 guitarists! There are plenty of real, talented guitarists out there who's style is based on emotion, feeling and nuance. But, they still are talented guitarists. Jack White may have all the emotion in the world, and may know how to act like a "rock star", but his style is sloppy, unoriginal, noisy and devoid of inspiration. As I said before, he's a cheap imitation of Thurston Moore. But the scary thing is, he's probably better than Kurt Cobain!

As far as the video goes, I've never been much of a Steve Vai fan, but even less of a Joe Satch fan. What really strikes me, though, is comparing Eric Johnson's style to the other two. No tapping, no whammy tricks, mostly melodic and bluesy. Even when he cut loose and began tearing up the fretboard at the end of his section, it fit the song. The other two sounded like metal shredders playing blues.

All that aside, though, there's still no comparison between Vai, Satch, Petrucci and posers like Jack White and Kurt Cobain. None. And when writers try to elevate the non-talented to the levels of the talented just for the sake of appealing to a certain demographic, it pi**es me off to no end. Kind of like how the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Shame) feels it necessary to include rappers in their nominations, even though rap is not rock and roll (or even music, for that matter)! White and Cobain are pretending to be guitarists, while the others are guitarists.

Of course, all of this is strictly IMNSHO and is worth exactly what you paid for it.

I call BS on several. First, Cobain should be nowhere near the top 50 all time. The guy was horrible. Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols wasn't much better.

Stevie Ray not in the top five....HOSSA FAIL!

Those not on the list who should be:

Jason Becker

Joe Satriani: (Let's see Keith Richards do THIS!)

They did “Little Village” together, too. With Jim Keltner and Nick Lowe.

“Bring the Family” was a lot better, though.

Can I just add to this list one name that is never mentioned. But if you've ever seen this song played by this man, it will blow you away;

Lindsay Buckingham: Big Love. Phenomenal

And although I am not a fan of country, THIS GUY could smoke 90% of the guitarists on the list.

I love John Hiatt’s music. Seen him a few times. But I have been unable to listen to anything after “Beneath this Gruff Exterior.” Every song seems to have a basing snare in the back.

Another great solo, indeed. I've said for years, with a good amount of confidence, that Dave Gilmour is the most underrated guitarist in rock and roll today. I stand by that opinion.
