Sharron Angle Was Once a Registered Democrat
CBS News ^ | June 16, 2010 | Stephanie Condon

Democrats and liberal bloggers continue to search for surprising facts about Tea Party-backed Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle, but the Associated Press has uncovered one fact the left may not have anticipated: Angle was once a registered Democrat and worked to elect a Democratic politician in Nevada.

Rather than giving any indication of her ideological beliefs, however, that fact may simply show her history of independence from the Republican party. In the 1990's, she belonged to a conservative third party. Angle won the Nevada GOP Senate primary this month, knocking out the establishment candidate to take on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

While Angle alluded to conservative hero President Ronald Reagan the night she won the primary, she in fact was a registered Democrat during part of his presidency. Records show, the AP reports, that Angle was a registered Republican until 1984, when she switched to the Democratic party. She stayed a Democrat at least through March, 1988.

Campaign spokesman Jerry Stacy told the AP Angle switched parties to work for a conservative Democrat running for state Senate, but she voted for Reagan in both 1980 and 1984.

"She's always been conservative," Stacy said. "She switched parties to help run the (Democrat's) campaign."

In 1992, Angle helped resurrect the Independent American Party, the Wall Street Journal reported. The party reportedly favors low taxes and opposes gun control, illegal immigration, abortion, gay rights and "global government." Angle rejoined the Republicans in 1997.

The candidate in Washington this week to meet with Republican Party officials and conservative activists, but she has taken some heat for avoiding reporters.

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) said that within weeks, reporters will have "complete, 100 percent access" to Angle, the Washington Post reports.

"I think she needs to get staffed up and prepared," he said. "The kind of scrutiny candidates undergo in a general-election race like this is far different than virtually anybody's been through before, and I just think it's a matter of due diligence and being prepared."

I’d heard that Reid was once a human but had it surgically removed.

Harry Reid has been a Registered Democrat since Sharon Angle quit the Democrat Party. Well Reagan used to be a Democrat too, so according to the Press only current Democrat Obama supporters count anyway.

Yes, it sure is.

Why knowledge she was a Democrat for a few years sure puts a damper on her electability. Imagine how damaged she’d be if she’d been one for decades like Reagan..oh wait.

Ridiculous statement.

No, it’s not: it’s alright to rat, but you can’t re-rat. She was a Republican then became a Democrat (at the height of the Reagan Revolution) and then later became a Republican again. The analogy isn’t to Reagan, it’s to Arlen Specter.

I doubt I’m helping them. Angle was a poor choice. Reid is no choice.

I’m not a turncoat. I never supported her. I thought she was the weakest of the three candidates running againts Reid.

She was a Democrat for four years, and has been a Republican for the last 22. Big whoopie do...

Exactly. The more I hear about her, the more I like her. She wants to pull the US out of the UN, kill the Education Department, and privatize social security. The moderates are screaming and the best they can come up with was that 22 years ago she was a Democrat. And after that she was third party because the GOP wasn't conservative enough for her. To me thats an endorsement, not a criticism.

I am pissing in the wind here, but I get bored with towing the line. She’s got a trainload of issues, this is just beginning.

I did know it...but it’s not what Angle did. Reagan left the Democratic party to become a Republican and the central figure of modern conservatism. Angle was a Republican and left the central figure of modern conservatism to become a Democrat. See the difference? ...or did you not know that?

...and as a conservative, before a Republican I will only support her if I think she’s a good conservative. I don’t.

I rest my case PARTYMAN!

“The only thing unraveling is your manhood.”

You’re coming to the defense of a conservative female? I’m at a loss for words. Up to now you were so predictable. Did Duncan Hunter and the Falcon Party approve that?

Oh so what, when I was in my 20’s I didn’t know which party to support. When Bill Clinton ran for office I thought he was womderful, by the end of his first term I was a hardcore conservative. Yes, Bill, Hill and Al made me a republican. Assuming BO will be responsible for making many more young Republicans. PS: Charlton Heston was once a Democrat too.
