Breaking: General Stanley McChrystal tenders his resignation

A senior Capitol Hill source tells me that General Stanley McChrystal had tendered his resignation to President Barack Obama and that the White House is actively discussing a replacement who could be quickly confirmed by the Senate.

The source said that among the names being touted as possible successors are General James Mattis, the outgoing head of the US Joint Forces Command and due to retire after being passed over as US Marine Corps commander, and Lieutenant General William Caldwell, commander of Nato’s Training Mission in Afghanistan.

Of course, offering to resign is not the same as actually resigning and it remains to be seen whether Mr Obama will accept the resignation.

3.) Resigns and then tells it like it is

That would be great but don't hold your breath. You can bet that the General's salary and benefits will be used as leverage: "if you say one word of anything to the public, you can kiss your military pension and bennys goodbye."

You have defined the difference between a "careerist" and a "patriot".

The patriot puts Country and the lives of his troops first and Bennys second.

General McChrystal has already offered his resignation. And, no, Obama cannot withold his pension. We are still a land ruled by Law. (See the ruling by Judge striking down Obamas drilling moratorium.)

McChrystal could have done much more good if he had had the moral courage to resign and tell it like it is (perfectly acceptable and highly honorable behavior for a retired officer) instead of waiting for Obama to fire him for insubordination while on active duty (Banana Republic behavior).

"If Mattis takes it, that would be great. He ain’t no perfumed prince, that is a fact."
You must be kidding me! Prove me wrong. Where was he for the Marines in the Haditha case? Think very carefully before you respond. And that is just one example.

That would be great except the best Lt. Col. for the job is retired and currently running for the House in Florida.

"Think very carefully before you respond."

Think very carefully about who you're asking to "think very carefully". LOL

I don’t disagree. I’m just not optimistic. As far as the ‘rule of law’ and the judge striking down the ban, apparently you missed the follow up segment to that, which is: they..interior dept and other nazi’s, are going to try & appeal that.

True Patriots didn’t vote for Obama because they could see through him at a 100 paces.

I agree. I, too, think it was calculated. But what is your theory as to why?

McChrystal got a look behind the curtain, saw all the red, and said “No way, Barry!”

Barry said “Go away then, but go away this way. I can’t have Generals speaking out about what they have seen.”

Mattis was no friend of troops in Iraq falsely accused by Murtha.

Yep. Nothing in politics happens by chance.

He voted for Obama who was his choice or who was not his choice.

If Obama was his choice, then he is no discerning student of politics.

If he voted for Obama and Obama was not his choice, then he had a different motive.

It could have been a negative motive...simply to get a command. It could have been a positive motive....so that some troop-minded general would be able to stand between troops and a misguided president in hopes of ensuring the right thing was done for troops.

I do not for one minute believe that McChrystal accidentally spoke in the open in front of a Rolling Stone reporter. He knew he was setting up an explosion.

What was his intent?

Why on God’s green Earth would we or anyone else vote for McChrystal for President?
