McChrystal denies offering to resign

WASHINGTON - At a precarious moment in the war in Afghanistan, President Barack Obama prepared to hear his top war commander explain biting published complaints about the commander in chief and his aides. Even before their showdown, the White House's rebuke of Gen. Stanley McChrystal suggested it would be hard for him to save his job.

Ahead of his meeting with the president, McChrystal arrived at the Pentagon for meetings, including once scheduled with Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

On his arrival, he denied to NBC News that he's offered his resignation. "Come on, you know better than that. No!"

The General may have suspected leaks and used the “I resigned” to ferret out who they were.

Maybe he just found the aide that fed the damaging info to the Rolling Stone.

Obama’s playbook comes from Alinsky; McChrystal is using Sun-Tzu.

Obama has to act like an adult and make a big boy decision.

His Chicago hack advisers aren’t going to be any help to him on this subject. And he can’t blame Bush because he appointed McChrystal. The easy way out would have been for McChrystal to resign but it looks like the General isn’t going to play along.

Interesting day indeed.

I noticed Geither, too. Obviously, the meeting is "to intimidate". Ye ole Chicago politics.

Hey...McChrystal is a white guy....no beer for you!!!

Obama "creates" scenes...Wonder if they'll roll in the White Foam Pillars...to make Obame look real, real good.

I wish it would, too, but I see the general really grovelling and apologizing for his “unfortunate use of words that certainly don’t indicate my heart,” blah, blah, blah. Just once, I’d like to see someone really intimidate B.O. and be honest with him, regardless of the consequences. How dare this lawless administration get all bent out of shape over this little anthill of a problem. Why suddenly start worrying NOW about the military not supporting B.O.? How could any of them support a leader who some feel is foisting treasonous acts on his own country by failing to protect it? Notice how this McChrystal stuff is forcing other things off the front page.

“Has he, not his staff, actually stated that?”

I’ve seen quotes of him saying he voted for Obama.

“Did someone witness him marking his ballot? “

Is that question a joke? He indicated he voted for BO. So he’s either a liar or a fool.

I have to wonder about the judgment of any general that would want to be placed in McChrystal's position. I have to wonder about McChrystal's judgment for voting for Obama. Would any of you want to be tasked with implementing Obama’s withdrawal from Afghanistan? You would forever be linked with losing the war in Afghanistan, and that is what is going to happen by setting political deadlines rather than military ones. Who wants to be the captain of a sinking ship?

“Our allies in NATO are watching this very, very closely.”

So are our enemies.

That wouldn’t surprise me. Imagine he has his civilian corps at the ready to defend us here, not there.

So, McChrystal is not giving Obama the easy out. Should be an interesting day indeed.

Zero would not have accepted McChrystal's resignation anyway. He has a whipping boy now.

A White House official said the meeting was postponed for scheduling reasons and would take place early next week.

It interferes with a couple of rounds of golf.

The General will have it his way, as the Stone article clearly shows. There will be no grovelling. He will be amused.

I agree...do we really know? The article just makes the claim that he did, but the claim wasn’t directly attributed to McChrystal, which I find interesting.

“The only thing attributable to McChrystal was his reflection of their first meeting where he stated that O’bummer was ill prepared and seemed intimidated by the military brass.

The truth hurts.”

Amen. There is NO DOUBT that B.O. was like a fish out of water with that group. Not only does he hate the brass, but he has not even an elemental understanding of the military. He himself could never have made it through basic training, much less officer candidate school, etc. For a person who flaps his jaws for a living, it must have been awful to be in a roomful of men whose masculine actions earned them those stars and bars.
