Wearing the Message: 'Don't Feed Our Bums'

Controversial stickers being sold in Ocean Beach have been joined by hats and t-shirts.
"All over, all over. People are coming from out of town to buy these stickers," business owner Tony Chavez said. On Newport Avenue, business is booming for The Black Head shop, at least for a few items in particular. They're down to their last couple hats and t-shirts and of the 3,000 stickers with the same message, not one remains. But the message they bare is more than some can bear. Wearing the Message: 'Don't Feed Our Bums'
The stickers read, "Please Don't Feed Our Bums." Its a message that business owners and residents, like Chavez, say reflects an increasing amount of trash and violence. A case in point is a running brawl among transients near the Ocean Beach pier on Labor Day, 2007, caught on home video by a local resident who can be heard wailing "Oh my God, what is with you? You guys are sick!" as she recorded the scenes.
The "Don't Feed Our Bums" message is aimed directly at Good Samaritans who serve the homeless food in various forms, and under conditions that don't comply with county health laws -- leaving trash behind, and more transients flocking to the area.
On the other side of the street, another side to the issue. Darlene Clark has lived on the streets of OB for ten years.
"It really causes a problem, especially with the way the economy is, we need all the money we can get here," Clark said. "You know, it's the new people that run in and out of here that only spend a week or two that are being aggressive to the business owners."
We need a please don't vote for a RAT sticker!
One of my chief pleasures in this town that preaches the “social justice” credo but turns a big fat fascist fist to homeless vets and Native Americans from the nearby reservations is to open my money clip and duke the boys a five or two for a jug of cracklin rosy. I like to see the Starbucks trust fund hippies scowl to see me, a successful rancher, toke the wrong kind of bums.
1. There are a few who fall between the cracks. As good people we should at least feed them and offer them shelter and opportunity;
2. Then there are the infirm and mentally ill on the streets that also should benefit from our compassion;
3. However, the vast majority of "homeless" prefer to be that. They prefer to drop out of society and live their lives as tramps, bums, and vagabonds.
I've interacted with these parasites as a teenager. While I wanted more, they were happy to live outside of our mainstream on the sidewalks. I worked in the most menial jobs to advance - they couldn't care less.
There will NEVER ever be a solution for the homeless. Too many prefer it that way. I say give them some soup and let them sleep in their cardboard boxes, as long as I don't have to trip over them.
They don't want to join us? Let them stand in line for a cot out of the cold during winter months. Once things warm up, they will be back on the streets with their stolen grocery carts moving their pathetic shitpile around while whining for you and I to give them stuff.
I like your attitudes.
Thank you. I have little compassion for those who drop out of our societal compact but still want stuff. I say frig them. I really don’t care if they die from their bad decisions. We all die eventually. Let them go first.
Excellent.
We shouldn’t corrupt them back into our materialistic slavery. Let them be free! Help them achieve exalted nothingness with....nothing.
“the homeless”
This is a phrase used by the Democrat “mainstream” newsrooms only during Republican administrations.
Thank you.
Ban taco’s and they will go home.
the homeless
I refuse to call them homeless. If your home burns down, you are homeless. If you choose to live in the trash heap and drop out of society, you are a vagrant.

“you are a vagrant.” - beastly, Sir, just beastly!
That line is so nicely crafted, so evocative (and provocative!), as well as so ironically humorously, that I nearly chocked on my coffee.
Well done, I say.
You have mastered the art of passive aggression :)
I read that headline and story 3 times before my brain realized it said “Don’t Feed Our Bums”.
I kept reading that as “Don’t FEEL Our Bums”, and thought it was a sticker to stop men from groping women in tiny bikinis.
Or maybe something from France.
PERFECT! And if they die in their pursuit of "nothingness" - too damn bad. I won't give one little s**t.
Nailed it.
