World Leaders Give Afghan Security Forces 5 Years to Take Control

As Gen. David Petraeus prepares to try and save a troubled war effort in Afghanistan, the world's eight top industrial democracies on Saturday set a timeline of five years for security forces there to "assume increasing responsibility."

The countries -- the U.S., Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan and Russia -- said in a joint statement that a conference in Kabul in July would be an important setting for assessing progress in implementing commitments made in January to train more than 100,000 additional Afghan security forces by the end of next year.

The G-8 leaders said it was important to accelerate efforts to make sure the country's own security forces can "assume increasing responsibility within five years."

This shows how significant McChrystal's stepping down was and how dangerous the situation there must be.

Petraeus called for this as a line in the sand IMO. Probably said he wouldn't take the helm unless the 5 year timeline was announced.

This is a huge humiliation for Obama whose henchmen were calling only last weekend for a pullout in July '11..a complete turnaround. The far left is going to be blazing mad.

I don’t think Petraeus agreed on a 5 year time line, but I’ll bet he told Obastard that he wouldn’t take the job unless he could modify the rules of engagement to what he wanted them to be and that Obastard would have to back down from the June 2011 pullout date.

The fact that the media is reporting that the ROE's will likely be changed indicates you're right about that.

Concerning the 5 year timeline...I would be surprised if an announcement would be made with the G8 in full agreement without the top Commander's counsel.

It doesn't matter what new timeline he agreed to. Once it's changed, the concept of a “date certain” is destroyed. The enemy can't trust us to cut and run when we promise to ever again.

If Petraeus forced a new timeline, any new timeline, it's a nice move. Kill the “date certain” forever and embarrass O with his idiot base in one clean shot.

Just goes to show how quick Petraeous will move....I think good to set the date way out there...this will undoubtedly throw the ol'Taliban off...they won't know what to expect nor how quickly our gov. can change military leadership in the future. This is going to be positive for our troops!

A brilliant strategy,as mcrystal knew there was no way to win and if he just left quietly, none of this would get out and the next General would not have the clout that Petreus has now.

I agree and the 5 year timeline will give Petraeus breathing room while still allow the OSTUPID one to claim there is a planned withdrawal.

This 5 yr timeline can and will be extended as long as Petraeus is in charge over there and should he ask for more time.

I'm not so sure McCrystal did any of this on purpose, after all he was specifically appointed by zero and McCrystal voted for him...that's a snug fit. But I would not be surprised if Petraeous used this ordeal to orchestrate whatever he wanted to change in the dynamics of this war as the situation with McCrystal came down.
