Lyndon Johnson is famous for saying that if he had lost the favorable opinion of liberal former CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite that he had lost that of most of America.
President Barack Obama may be at a similar juncture now. With his poll numbers continuing a downward trend in light of the Gulf oil leak, his unpopular health care bill, and deficit spending, liberal comedian Jon Stewart asked a question Monday that is now beginning to emerge even in the minds of stalwart Democrats: Is government capable of doing anything large and expansive ?
As chronicled by Noel Sheppard at NewsBusters, Stewart challenged top Obama adviser David Axelrod on whether or not the administration is capable of doing any of the big things it’s promised, an argument long made by conservatives and libertarians wary of government encroachment.
“It’s clear that this administration believes that government can have a stronger hand in regulating Wall Street, in regulating energy, in doing these things. But has government during this time proved itself competent?” Stewart asked.
Axelrod defended his colleagues and argued, as pointed out here by David Freddoso, that the administration’s response to the H1N1 flu is proof that it is up to the task of big government. It was a striking remark that illustrated perhaps the biggest reason why President Obama is similar to Jimmy Carter: big government in practice is actually the best argument against big government in theory.

About a year ago, I told someone who got most of their news for Stewart and Colbert that if things keep going the way they are, then ten years from now Colbert will still be flogging dead horses, looking for ratings once his core audience has been forced to grow up and Stewart would be a news host on Fox.

They took the money and ran.
It will all be gone and the country will be in worse shape.
All of the Democrats will be screaming for the release of their second chakra.
And the common flu killed more people than H1N1 in the end.

I believe we are far past that point, there seems to be little to no sense of proportion, of the borderline between the serious and the absurd. Obummer stood on the stage at Denver and said that he would DEFEAT POVERTY, DISEASE AND CLIMATE CHANGE! Think about that for a moment! I mentioned that to one man and his response was to tell me that, “They all make promises they don’t keep”! My jaw dropped and I replied that there is a huge difference in making insincere promises that are within human power to keep if a person intended to do so, or at least are not totally beyond the limits of human powers and making the type of promises Obama made which obviously could be kept only by a supreme being, an omnipotent God. He didn’t seem to even grasp my meaning.
I think that even twenty years ago such a statement made by a nominee for president would have guaranteed his loss rather than his being worshiped as a messiah. I find it exceedingly strange that there has been so little notice taken of such an absurd promise. In the past this kind of thing would have been taken as the insult it was. Obama may as well have looked at the audience and said, “I don’t really think I am God but I damned sure think you are stupid enough to believe that I am God”.
The acceptance was the last speech by the Kenyan that I have watched with full attention. I found it to be possibly the strangest political speech I have ever heard. I still shake my head when I realize that he was allowed to get away with something so ridiculous. In a sane world all McCain would have had to do is pick segments of that speech to keep replaying for the voters and McCain, as bad a candidate as he was, would have won with ninety percent of the vote. Instead we were subjected to reviews praising this clown to the skies for that ridiculous acceptance speech! Truth? Nearly half the population has no actual concept of truth.

I don't believe so. It posed a danger. It could have been very, very bad. Always good to treat influenza A as if it might go 1918. But its nothing to claim credit for stopping. Axelrod and Obama had zero to do with the virus not being more deadly. But maybe they think they did. They are that arrogant.

The above question is waaaay too insightful for a democrat to ask. Stewart's becoming interesting...
