Liz Cheney joins calls for Steele to step down as leader of the RNC By Walter Alarkon - 07/03/10 10:33 AM ET

Liz Cheney joined conservative calls for Michael Steele to resign his post as Republican National Committee chairman because his remarks about the Afghanistan war.

Steele's comments "were deeply disappointing and wrong," said Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, in a statement Saturday.

"The chairman of the Republican Party must be unwavering in his support for American victory in the war on terror — a victory that cannot be accomplished if we do not prevail in Afghanistan," said Liz Cheney, who serves as chairwoman of Keep America Safe, a conservative foreign policy group.

Cheney said she fully endorsed a letter by Bill Kristol, another Keeping America Safe board member, that called on Steele to resign.

"It is time for Chairman Steele to step down,” she said.

Steele was caught on camera this week questioning the U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan, calling it "a war of [President] Obama's choosing" and saying that it was "not something the United States had actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in."

“If he's such a student of history,” Steele said at a fundraiser in Connecticut, “has he not understood that you know that's the one thing you don't do, is engage in a land war in Afghanistan? All right, because everyone who has tried, over a thousand years of history, has failed. And there are reasons for that. There are other ways to engage in Afghanistan.”

While Obama has taken heat from the right over his war strategy, it has largely been because he didn't immediately accept the recommendations of top generals last year to further increase the U.S. troop presence in Afghanistan. Obama later announced a troop buildup, and conservatives more recently have supported the president's decisions, particularly his move to replace Gen. Stanley McChrystal with Gen. David Petraeus.

In addition to Kristol and Cheney, RedState founder Erick Erickson has called for Steele's resignation.

Steele has become an embarrassment and should resign effective immediately.

He has not learned the cardinal rule of interviewing: less is more.

Steele embarrasses himself every time he opens his dumb stupid mouth.

I think the head of the RNC needs to take an IQ test before he gets the job.

I love the Cheneys but from a purely historical point of view Steele is right.

What is wrong with these delusional Republicans? Do they think they can spew off this crap to audiences and not get caught on video? Someone needs to sit conservatives down in a training session on common sense, explain today’s technology, and what the press will do when they say such stupid things. Another “Macaca Moment” for the GOP.

Obama is Nation building in Afghanistan, using troops as police officers with their hands tied behind their backs.

Steel is wrong, Obama is not fighting a war.

He's just feeding infidel soldiers into an Islamic meat grinder for his personal entertainment.

Steel needs to wake the f*&k up.

Steele was an “affirmative action” pick by the loafer wearing, Country Club republican RINO set. He was supposed to get blacks to vote for republicans. Screw CONSERVATIVES, of course, republican higher ups were interested in the BLACK vote. And McCain went after the “undecideds” and “moderates!!” That worked out well too, didn’t it!!!

Steele is right. 0zero is not going to prosecute this war in a fashion that will end in victory and it’s unfair to our troops. But there are plenty of reasons to get rid of Steele.

How many voters nationwide care about what Cheney or Steele say? If you are a true conservative you do not donate to that RINO bunch anyway, you give to individual candidates. The grassroots will have to win this in Nov, screw the RNC and the talking heads on TV.

Steele is not a stupid man. He is in fact a very clever man.

He is also a sabateur.

No, the true “sabateurs” are those who would support Obama’s War rather than act like a true OPPOSITION party. We can’t afford to keep policing the world. Steele was right.

I stopped giving any funds to the RNC after the 2008 Election. I won’t give them anymore funds. My money now goes directly to the candidates who I locally know and support. The RNC wastes the money they receive.

When Sam Fox resigned from leadership at the RNC earlier this year and he was the largest contributor of the RNC it sends a message that their monied base is waning and they better take action to right the RNC or they will not have any sucess in 2010 or 2012. We want to elect good candidates but the RNC is holding back the GOP with Michael Steele as its leader.

Time for a change.

Hey, if you want to keep losing elections and run up the national debt, then you should give your money instead to Kristol’s Weekly Standard which helped lead the party to this disaster with its world policing foreign policy. Steele is right. For once the GOP should action like a true OPPOSITION party and stop shilling for Obama’s War.

There are a lot better black conservatives that are not embarssments and that have great interviewing skills. Steele does not.

The country club set supports Obama’s War. Steele’s stand against Obama’s Afghan policy is a refreshing break from that club.

We have a grand opportunity in November. Think how great it could be with real leadership at the RNC.
