Posted on 07/05/2010 12:23:28 PM PDT by Qbert
The behemoth Taiwanese oil skimmer, A Whale, is not yet ready attack the Gulf of Mexico oil spill after a weekend of testing proved inconclusive, said a statement this morning from TMT Shipping Offshore, owner of the ship.
"After an initial 48-hour testing period, results remain inconclusive in light of the rough sea state we are encountering," said Bob Grantham, spokesman for the company. "Over this same period, very few other skimmers have even been deployed. Therefore, working in close coordination with the US Coast Guard, we will be undertaking an additional testing period to make operational and technological adjustments aimed at improving skimming effectiveness given the actual conditions we are encountering in the Gulf."

This vessel could/should have been in the Gulf of Mexico sucking up this extremely toxic sludge days after the Obamagusher began!
Testing, more testing. What do we lose by letting it go out and try?
I’ve seen a few of these articles today, but not one of them has said how A Whale has failed any tests.
They talk about rough seas in which hampers all cleanup, but they don’t say something like “A Whale only collects at half the rate expected”, which is still a lot faster than anything else we have out collecting).
It’s almost like the articles have been trying to blame A Whale for the rough sea problems.
Take down the rules and open the gulf to anything and anybody, who wants to clean it up.
Unless of course this gov't wants the disaster to escalate.
It did not mention in the article but I believe I heard that it could take in 1,000,000 gallons a day.
Any person who can’t see the deliberate foot dragging of the administration at this point is in a state of denial.
What total complete stupidity!
It was tested using fire fighting foam and worked perfectly.
Unleash the EPA from all its stupid rules. Fire the totally ineffective Lisa Jackson. (She, like most to the rest of Zer0’s administration are there solely because they’re black, but are in way over their heads.)
Start getting rid of the oil, before it hits the loop current.
Skim baby skim!
“OK let me get this straight, the supposed worst ecological disaster in the history of mankind is taking place, according to the obama administration. A chance to stop it or diffuse it is available and instead of using it they will do a study first!
Take down the rules and open the gulf to anything and anybody, who wants to clean it up.”
One would think. God help us all if we should ever have another 9/11 with Obumbler and his minions in charge...
You are RIGHT ON!!! From day one the big boats should been INVITED in, here on the coast we have some harsh words for this ‘so called’ administration, can’t say what I want to cause I would be thrown off FR....
It wasn’t built by the UAW and isn’t operated by Teamsters.
So you can see Baraq’s aversion to using it........
The Obama administration would lose the ability to turn the entire population of the Gulf region against “big oil”. That is what’s going on here. Extreme environmental and economic damage IS the goal here. Recently, miles of oil boom had been vandalized and cut up. Hmmmm.. Now WHO would do this and why? Hmmm... Obama’s lack of action is intentional.
Good point. Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a President that was working for America instead of the leader of a coalition to destroy the country?

Great point. The GOP should come out blasting away at the EPA over this (especially with all the talk of cap and tax in the air). The EPA can’t see the forest (the greatest environmental disaster in our history) for the trees (its useless regulations supposedly enacted to “protect the environment”).
What are you...CRAZY??!!??
The bureaucrats must keep us safe from evil corporations who would kill us if it weren't for the...bureaucrats.
Help us Lisa Jackson...you're our only hope.
OH well... and predictable.
Deem it so.
“Unleash the EPA from all its stupid rules.”
Yeah that would be the day! A Whale’s discharge is only 99% oil free... not good enough, hence the continued testing. Rough seas: not for a 1000 footer... the smaller boats take in in the shorts with current conditions... A Whale takes oiled water in through slots in the bow... unlike other skimmers.
This isn't EPA testing, or Coast Guard, it is testing by the company to see if the skimmer can pick up emulsified tars without clogging the openings, the filters and the ejection ports. They are likely going to attempt to keep the craft on the 'sheen' areas to avoid the tar mats which are nearly impossible to skim with a craft like this.
Like every other thing this administration does, study the problem till it becomes a big enough problem to need to sieze some more money.
Of course it should have been on sight "Testing" by the end of April. That just didn't fit with the Obama administration need for a disaster.
The EPA mandates 15 parts per million of oil in water output... A Whale emits 25 parts per million... this is all about 10 parts per million of oil... instead... we get 100% of what is escaping right now and it is staying in the Gulf. The only reason that they are delaying this all is because obama wants it that way. They delay and block at EVERY opportunity... not just in this case.
Ask yourself this... if Bush were President right now, would the government be an impediment to this cleanup or a partner in this endeavor... and why?
Time for a march on Washington, obama and his minions are doing this on purpose
What in the world is going on with the coast guard!?!?! This bureaucratic mess is completely frustrating.
You are so full of it. The "company testing" is being done at the command of the EPA. And the idea that a thousand foot long ship designed to suck up a half-million gallons of spilled oil a day hasn't been thought through thoroughly by engineers, is absurd.
"Sheen areas"? "Tar mats"? "Nearly impossible to skim"? Your terms are as bogus as your implied experience and knowledge.
"A craft like this"? Biggest lie of all - "a craft like this" is DESIGNED for a problem LIKE THIS.
Go back to your government bunker and get more training.
No. GWB would have been on the phone with the Saudis and other countries experienced in oil cleanups, from Day One. He'd have waived the Jones Act and any other horse-manure laws and regulations that impede cleanup efforts.

Exactly! If it doesn't work they're not going to spend the money to stay out there. This has to be deliberate obstruction of clean up efforts. The list of plans and people who have been blocked from doing or trying anything is getting quite long.
Yes sir, I'll be sure to do that. Meanwhile, you might want to just do a google search of Bob Grantham, the company spokeshole, who stated that testing was required to configure the ship. It's only repeated on virtually every newswire. As for the rest, I defer to your considerable expertise and remain appropriately chastised.
Someone posted a theory about the runaway well affecting an earthquake on the New Madrid fault. A connection between the two is crazy but what if a giant disaster like that did occur? With 0boyIwon in charge? That is a spine-chilling thought to say the least.
“God help us all if we should ever have another 9/11 with Obumbler and his minions in charge...”
Yes, he would just have all the twin towers employees get under their desks and wait.
Just wait for Alex’s sister to make it into the Gomex at the end of this week and hit Teaxs/LA.
How appropriate...she is on Comedy Central explaining her job...that is all this white house and government is...Comedy Central.
Do we think for one moment the designers built a huge ship that simply doesn't work as designed?
Do we think the owners bought this huge ship without knowing it would work?
I smell a rat in the oily dunes....Is that you....Oily "O"?
Followed your knowing guidance (except didn’t use lefty Google) and determined that testing is at Coast Guard, BP(corporation with $ 20 B gun at their head), and EPA direction.
100% correct and the “why” I was seeking is because obama wants it that way.
The guy who obstructed BAIPA is now obstructing the cleanup.
He is a sociopath, but one who effects his carnage through inaction.
“...what if a giant disaster like that did occur? With 0boyIwon in charge?”
That’s when ObaMao hits the Internet kill-switch to further hinder the rescue efforts, unfortunately...
sounds like mostly local yahoos trying to get out to their favorite fishing holes
Moreover, we aren’t that crazy about the Taiwanese these days. Money grubbing capitalist running dogs.
Here’s a source for oil boom vandalism on 26 May 2020:
Fox News cable reported more oil boom vandalism which occurred over the last 2 or 3 days but I can’t find source for that one. Nonetheless, it’s a problem, with more than one occurrence.
If this ship works at all, 0bama will have to answer why he waited 70+ days to allow this thing to operate. There is no way this will be approved for cleanup. In fact, it will be destroyed by the administration and the lap dog media as a distraction and a waste of time from speeches about cleaning up the gulf.
“After an initial 48-hour testing period, results remain inconclusive in light of the rough sea state we are encountering,” said Bob Grantham, spokesman for the company.
Rough seas my a$$. According to the buoy in the vicinity of the spill the seas are 3 ft.
The ship didn’t exist 70+ days ago. Not as a skimmer, at least. It was not converted to become a skimmer until after the spill.
