Governor Palin's Plan for Illegal Aliens (vanity)
07/09/2010 | sinanju

Posted on 07/09/2010 8:33:42 PM PDT by sinanju

My opinion of Sarah just took a dent. She was on Bill O'Reilly's show and he quizzed her about her opinion, in his overbearing fashion, on how to deal with the illegal alien problem.

I'm afraid it seemed instantly obvious that either she has not spent five minutes looking into the issue and talking to people who actually know something about the problem or she has and is keeping her real plans secret a la Chris Christie.

She did not bring up any specifics or actual ideas and plans and basically let Blowhard Bill lead her around by the nose for seven minutes. They then concluded with some meaningless cheery sentiments about the mama grizzlies and concluded. BOR moved on.

I realize she is busy building up chits playing kingmaker and tweeting and all that but I would like to at least see and hear some evidence that she is doing some serious policy formulation and (if she does run for prez) will have a battle plan on day one.

Appearing on Bill's show for barely enough time to smile and chirp for less than ten minutes is decidedly discouraging to people like myself, who desperately want to take her seriously.

"So you've closed the borders, now you have ten million people sitting here looking at you, what are you going to do about them?" "Make them register?"

"Well, I, uh.."

She should not have set herself up like that. Bill barely gave her enough time to recite the Pledge of Allegiance but she could have gotten her message across if she had had a message.

Not good.

Your characterization of the interview isn't very good.

She did fine. She held her own quite well, she also made it clear she would take a no nonsense approach to the subject, using registration and deportation to deal with the problem

You don't like those ideas?

Well you just said it.... that once Sarah said “well, um...” Bill interjected himself into it...it was a bad interview because Bill is about Bill.....She has spoken more clearly with Greta...maybe it was about a May interview, I believe!

Not my take. My read was you can’t announce amnesty cause millions will scoot in, and she didn’t want to say anyone still here would get amnesty for the same reason. Something she said about being uncomfortable discussing it.
Bill is all about Bill a real creep and not much at interviewing.

LOL, sure you do.

Well, keep trying. And if nothing sticks, cry in your wheaties for all of the millions of people who are having delusions of clarity about her, in the face of your searing inability to see anything.

She has been disappointing on this issue. You would think that with all the publicity illegal immigration has gotten for more than five years, she could have sat down with Tom Tancredo and gotten some really sound ideas. Tancredo has a really common sense approach - make it difficult for them to make money and they will self-deport, thereby solving the problem for us. This is the only thing that we can do. If we do not do this we will be caught in the amnesty trap of 1986. You can call amnesty by another name and you can add some psuedo get tough measures but it is still amnesty because they are rewarded by staying here.

After reading that, I have no idea what Palin said about immigration? Would you please elaborate just a bit?

She has been disappointing on this issue

You didn't hear what she said tonight nor what she's been clearly saying for months on this issue did you?

You think it might be because you don't want to hear?

She did an awesome interview...Imagine Obama answering that question. Nah can’t do that, he’s too busy blaming bush and Republicans to actually answer real questions about real problems...

I’ve always been underwhelmed by Palin’s interviews. Just don’t see what other FReepers do.

She did great! and she got 'specific' enough for me..... she would do "WHATEVER IT TAKES" to secure our borders.

Who else has provided better assurance????

She was against amnesty and mentioned the amnesty mistake made by one of our truly great presidents. She wants a significant number of troops on the border. She spoke of learning from history. She knows that the denial of amnesty means that they remain illegal and subject to deportation. I was impressed with her answer. There is no simple perfect solution.

Just my opinion, and I’m sure I’ll get flamed . . . Sarah must learn to speak with authority, get to the point with speed, and put forth a plan. Any hesitation on her part, as we saw tonight on O’Reilly, will be an opening for someone to interject BEFORE she gets to her points.

You’re not going to get anything from him....this has been discussed in a earlier thread...Bill was just talking all over Sarah, interrupting her and SHE COULDN’T GET WORD WISE IN....Sarah seemed resigned to let BOR blow is mouth out in the 7 minute interview

Here you go.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right, now, I know that your past as governor of Alaska didn’t — was not the same time that Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona has gotten into office, but I assume that sort of governor to governor...
PALIN: Yes.
VAN SUSTEREN: What’s your thought on the heat that she’s taking over this statute?
PALIN: I’m proud of Jan Brewer for standing up for the constituents in her state, sending a message to Washington, sending a message to President Obama saying, Hey, you need to do your job, sir. And if you’re not going to do it, OK, then we are compelled to do the job for you until you get it right.
President Obama has been suspiciously silent on this issue, hasn’t he? We don’t even know where he stands on immigration reform or securing our borders. He doesn’t talk about it. He gets to punt on that one. And that’s unfortunate because this is a big issue. It’s all about national security. It’s about our sister border states that are inundated with violence and with crime because people illegally crossing the border, engaging in illegal activities for too long now. And some of these border states are saying, Now we’ve had enough. I admire Jan Brewer for taking a stand.
VAN SUSTEREN: Why do you think — I mean, for 20-some years, maybe even longer, even going back to President Reagan — everyone has always said, We’re going to secure the borders.
PALIN: Yes.
VAN SUSTEREN: Nobody has done anything. I mean, or almost nothing.
PALIN: Because they’ve made it political and they haven’t understood that unsecure borders isn’t fair to anybody. It’s not fair to American citizens who ware here legally, paying taxes, following the rules, doing all the things that an American citizen is expected to do. It’s not fair to them. But it’s not fair to the illegal aliens, either, here. They want to come pursue an American dream. Some of them do want to be here to work. But they’re forever going to have to hide because, you know, government’s going to crack down on them when (INAUDIBLE)
So they need to follow that path of legal citizenship, obviously. But these politicians, presidents in the past who have not secured the border, they’ve made it a political issue. They haven’t wanted to tick off a potential base of Hispanic voters, so they haven’t made the tough decisions. And that’s no way to solve the problem. That’s no way to solve any challenge in America, by ducking and hiding and creating division and making these partisan issues out of it.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
VAN SUSTEREN: Well, we have still more with Governor Sarah Palin. Governor Palin is blunt about what she would do about illegal immigration. She’s going to tell you.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
VAN SUSTEREN: Continuing with former governor Sarah Palin on illegal immigration.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
VAN SUSTEREN: Both parties have made promises. I mean, we pull up sound bites where, you know, both sides, you know, Democrat, Republicans, say, you know, Secure the border, secure the border. And then once in office, we certainly don’t see a whole lot of action. Had the election gone another way, or even if you were president, what would you do about immigration?
PALIN: The very first thing is literally secure the border!
VAN SUSTEREN: How?
PALIN: People mock the idea of a fence. What’s wrong with building a fence? Yes, let’s physically secure the border. Let’s ramp up border control. Let’s provide the tools for those who are putting their lives on the line in order to stop illegal immigration of these aliens. Those are a couple of things.
And then you don’t start talking about amnesty, either, kind of as this last-minute, Oh, anybody who’s here in the country right now, we’re going to provide you amnesty, and even though you’ve broken the law and we are a nation of laws, you’ve broken that, we’ll still give you — because then there’s going to be a huge influx of those wanting kind of at the last minute to come over the border because they know that they will forever then receive that amnesty.
So you don’t start talking about that, but the very first thing you do is physically, literally secure those borders. It baffles me and most Americans why for all these years presidents, administrations have spoken about it but never done it.

Forget the registration. Just take away their means of making money by tightening up on the abuse of social security numbers, toughen up welfare rules etc and they will have to leave. You have to take a scientific approach - you have to study what allows them to stay here and take those things away. As for all of the heart-tugging stories about families being torn apart — this is all nonsense because LEGAL immigrants go back to their native countries every day taking their American raised children with them, no one thinks this is a human rights issue. It is only when the parents are illegals that this is portrayed as a great tragedy.

She could have done better.

She should have told BOR to keep quiet and then detailed a five bullet point plan.

Palin all too often gets emotional, and wonders around in circles.
