Regarding the Germans, for the most part our people honored the Geneva Convention and took prisoners. There were some cases where a POW was shot. I won't defend nor criticize those decisions, but I do agree with your dad.
Max Hastings made a very interesting observation in one of his books on WWII in Europe. At some point, the German Generals knew that the war was lost. They could have saved the lives of hundred of thousands of soldiers and civilians. They could have surrendered, and they knew that the Americans would be merciful. But they didn't. Another irony is that the German soldiers fought on despite the odds. But for what were they fighting? The Allies were there to liberate the German people and their soldiers. The German soldiers fought on to keep a horrific system of Government in power, and in so doing, cost them their own lives and the lives of their loved ones.
There were cases where a group of youths would fire at the enemy, but they didn't understand the concept of fire and maneuver. Many of them were caught because they simply stayed where they were.
When i was very young i was a collector of military items and not all the history that surrounded them. I and a friend visited some twin girls that were very cute. Being cool i put on my new acquisition which was the same cap shown in your picture. ( always wondered why it would be so small, i was like 13yr and it was tight.
Only later did I realize these were the small sizes for children of volkswher and why these were found in storage.

If they are under 10 I would try to get the weapon away from them, but if they are a teenager with a weapon in hand they are fair game.
Yes it is brainwashing in the fact that they are having these “children” defend the indefensible, but outside of western culture, 14 is considered a man. Our kids are insulated, by God, we think it is OK to pay for our kids til eternity. In most cultures, boys are taught to grow up and produce at very young ages. “Children” fought in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. We allow for 17 yr. olds to join the military, the average age on the front line is 20, yet they can’t buy a beer!
Besides, putting children on the front line is nothing new.
