Sen. Kerry docks yacht in R.I., saves ($500K) on taxes

BOSTON — Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry is docking his family's new $7 million yacht in neighboring Rhode Island, saving roughly $500,000 in Bay State taxes.

The Boston Herald reported Friday the 76-foot, New Zealand-built sloop has two cabins, a pilot house fitted with a wet bar and cold wine storage. It is owned by a limited liability corporation in Pittsburgh, the longtime home of Kerry's wife, philanthropist Teresa Heinz Kerry.

If the boat were docked at the couple's summer vacation home on Nantucket, they would be liable for $437,500 in one-time sales tax. They'd also have to pay $70,000 in annual excise taxes.

Instead, Rhode Island has repealed those taxes.

A Kerry spokesman says the boat is being kept at Newport Shipyard not for tax reasons, but "for long-term maintenance, upkeep and charter purposes."

But, but I thought only evil Republicans were wealthy elitist snobs who did everything they could to avoid paying their fair share in taxes?

” Maybe he gets around it by having a PA LLC owning the boat.”

There are maybe 1 million truly wealthy people in the USA, and there is a reason a top notch tax attorney can demand $800-$1000.00 an hour (1-2 million a year), and get it.

Thanks, I thought I read about that.

500K is a lot of liquor tax. They should just send 1 guy down to Newport. Or over to Beacon Hill.

” Kerry this week said Heinz’ move to stay out of the clutches of the state’s tax collectors isn’t related to the tax rate - it’s because it would be too complex to move her corporate and philanthropic empire here.”

Yeah, dat would be a real muh fugguh....LOL!

"...his family's new $7 million yacht"

He could have got a Sun Tracker and saved his wife about $6,975,000. You can buy a lot of white raisins for your martinis with that. ;o)

I don’t like the cut of his gib.

It’s a good lesson here for Ms. Pelosi, not that I would think she would accept it. The lesson for these socialists is that we (at all levels) we all vote with our feet. We send jobs where there’s less tax and regulation. We move our families to places where there is less taxation. We purchase things where there’s lesser taxes, etc. The end result of taxing / regulating us to death isn’t the utopia these socialists seem to desire. Left in the wake of these ships heading to better seas is empty store fronts, unemployment, fewer persons to donate to charitable causes, and the ‘need’ to increase taxes.

And the point is...?

I don’t blame anyone for using very legal means to avoid taxes.

And, frankly, I don’t get that excited about people being creative in avoiding taxes.

If taxes were fairly imposed, weren’t excessive and often immorally imposed then avoiding them wouldn’t be an issue.

Idiots who endorse and vote for hypocritical politicians like Kerry are more to blame for this.

Opportunity, human nature and reason create intended tax “maneuvers” for the Kerry types while unintended consequences result for useful idiots that favor central planners.

“The people” vote for their representatives after all.

How about passing a law where ONLY John Kerry pays more taxes. I would support that tax increase.

I may be ‘mis-remembering’, but doesn’t MA also stake out NH liquor stores to nab people taking drives up there to avoid the taxes?

Yes. And Connecticut does it too, to their folks who go to MA!

Recently, we've seen Ohio do it to their own residents who travel to Kentucky (a three minute drive from Cincinnati.) Cigarettes in KY are half the price of Ohio.

"“All her operations are based in Pittsburgh, all the foundations, it’s just too complicated legally (to move),” Kerry said."

Any sane person would take that as a clue that we have too many laws.
