Duisburg, Germany - At least 10 people died Saturday at a techno-music festival in the German city of Duisburg when crowds of people were crushed in a tunnel leading to the event grounds, police said.

Early reports by news channel NTV said that 15 people had been resuscitated by emergency rescue staff following the crush at the Love Parade event, which reportedly occurred when a security control point was overwhelmed by festival goers.

The Love Parade is one of Europe's largest electronic music events...

I'm not feelin' the love.

I have a general rule to avoid the type of people who would just as soon crush me as wait their turn in line.

I've been to some VERY crowded Christian events (concerts, Promise Keepers, Stand in the Gap (Washington DC)). I never once feared that the people would kill me to get where they wanted to go.

No one snowflake ever felt responsible for an avalanche.

I am watching the coverage on TV, the party is still going on and there is a report of a hostile crowd at the train station when told they should leave.

They report 1.4 million people and the place is too small for it.

Mobil phone network is collapsed and the trains just stopped running because people are on the tracks.

They are afraid if they stop the music that would cause more peril.

“They report 1.4 million people and the place is too small for it.”

If you use media methods to determine crowd size at more conservative oriented events, the number is more like 3 or 4 thousand people.

Also, I think all of this is FUD ... Europe is perfect and things like this would never happen in Euroland.

“Love Parade” is not a family friendly event. It use to be held in Berlin, but got moved out of that city. I've seen some video tape. A good amount of public sex, and public urination and deification in front of cheering crowds. I think there is also a minimum of three nose rings and two lip rings required per participant.

This wouldn’t have happened in a place like the Tiergarten (where they originally held this event), where there is plenty of space to release any crowd pressure.

Big crowds are dangerous. Always, no matter what. Those so-called “public viewing” events, where hundreds of thousands of people watch a soccer game together on some big inner-city boulevard, are also always dangerous. I always cringe when I see people bring their little kids to such events. Evidently they have no idea what a mass panic looks like; or how dangerous a little crush can become when enough people are involved.

Remember Dr. Motte?

The politics threw it out of Berlin because they kept fighting over the clean-up.

My wife walked in the first Loveparade on the Kudamm. She is best friends with the Lady who owned “Summer Love” the official magazine for the Loveparade. They just met with the babies last week although her friend was only babysitting for someone, but calls it “my baby”.

For the record my wife is Far Right - LoL!

Yeah, I remember Motte, and the incredibly vapid love-speeches he held on the parades. I wonder how much money he made out of all this.
My wife walked in the first Loveparade on the Kudamm.
I was there a few times, too, also once when it was on the Kuhdamm already. I am not sure if it was the first time, but one of the first. I do not remember the year, only that it was incredibly hot weather that day.
For the record my wife is Far Right - LoL!
The “politics” of the Love Parade always seemed so ridiculously infantile and vapid that it was easy for me to ignore, too. The parties were quite good, especially in the early years. Later on, the crowds consisted less of pretty almost-nekkid girls and more of old drunkards looking for a reason to down a few extra Schultheiss. I didn’t particularly regret it when it ended at last.

Reminds me of my trip to South Korea this spring. The older guys who had been there before (including ex-military who had been stationed there) told me that if you ever see a large crowd gathering, don’t hang around to see what it’s about, get the hell out of there. Another thing to look out for is a large gathering of police. If you see either of those two things, rioting, flying molotov cocktails, tear gas, and cops swinging billy clubs at anything not wearing a uniform is soon to follow. Not good.

Some years ago a couple of friends and I were at the (carnival) dance of the Marktfrauen at the Viktualienmarkt in Munich, and all of a sudden the crowd around me got *very dense*... only a few yards to the edge of things but damn, that was not comfortable! Took a few minutes to get out of there, and that was a fairly open space. Don't even want to imagine what it was like in that tunnel in Duisburg today. Heard people were stuck in there for hours. *shudder*

This reminds me of the time I almost got crushed to death at a Neil Diamond concert. I didn't even want to go to the Neil Diamond concert but my wife is a big fan so I sucked it up and went. As we were walking through the concession areas on our way to our seats, the PA system started playing "Longfellow Serenade."

Panicked fans, thinking they were missing the start of the concert (it was actually still almost an hour away) started screaming and hollering and rushing for the entrances to the arena. My wife and I were literally lifted off our feet for a brief moment as we squeezed into one of the entrances. Once the hysterical maniacs got into the arena and saw that the concert hadn't actually begun, things calmed down pretty quickly, but was that one scary moment!

"I think when the people density is high enough some folks will freak out and then the mass starts moving. Christian or not."

I was in the crowd at Dodger Stadium when Pope JP2 came. Though it was packed, no one pushed, everyone was polite - even in the parking lot! People were letting cars in front of them, taking turns.(!!!) We called it "the miracle of Dodger Stadium" because usually, after a baseball game, it was a zoo!
