Whenever I hear Trudeau mentioned, it brings to mind this couplet bt Edna St Vincent Millay:

Trudeau convinced the anglos in Ontario that he was a good guy because he was against Quebec separating itself from Canada.

Because he got their support, he was able to implement all his socialist policies.

I tend to think that if it hadn't been Trudeau it would have been someone else.

Canada was (and still is) too tied to following what Britain is doing to be a strong leader with fresh ideas in its own right IMO. It's possible that will change but elitism reigns big in that country (including a crippling attitude of looking down their noses at their neighbors to the South).

Sadly you're right. It seems to me parliamentary democracies are almost certainly domed to corporatism.
