I wonder why the batteries are called rare earth?

You'll better understand the "rare" modifier when the battery fails and you have to buy a new one.

Because they use “rare earth” minerals, which aren’t really that rare after all. But, when they were discovered, they were hard to get to, so they were called “rare earth”.
