Had Andrew Breitbart dutifully written a column detailing how an obscure USDA official, Shirley Sherrod, and her husband, Charles Sherrod, had scammed the government out of millions, the story would have had the range and lifespan of a fruit fly.
Instead, as the world knows, Breitbart released an edited version of Shirley Sherrod's speech before the NAACP that provoked national headlines and caused the NAACP to denounce her and a panicky Obama administration to fire her from her position as the Georgia Director of Rural Development for the USDA.
Then, of course, when the full version of the speech emerged -- which showed Sherrod as a recovering racist, not as a practicing one -- the Obama White House fell all over itself apologizing, and the media turned their guns on Breitbart.
Breitbart, however, had put a potentially huge story into play the only way he could -- through sheer provocation. As he knew, and as we are learning, the story goes well beyond Sherrod's long-ago racist mischief-making with a poor white farmer.
This past Sunday, in his weekly column for the San Francisco Chronicle, "Willie's World," veteran black politico Willie Brown confirmed that "there is more to the story than just [Sherrod's] remarks."
"As an old pro," Brown acknowledged, "I know that you don't fire someone without at least hearing their side of the story unless you want them gone in the first place." Brown observed that Sherrod had been a thorn in the USDA's side for years, that many had objected to her hiring, and that she had been "operating a community activist organization not unlike ACORN." Although Brown does not go into detail, he alludes to a class action lawsuit against the USDA in which she participated some years ago.

sorry jack get your story straight it was not edited it was a clip not EDITED. CAN THESE PEOPLE PLEASE GET THE STORY STRAIGHT!!!
I agree when you start with a lie I can not read the rest.
If she sues Breitbart, this stuff will come out ... whether slowly, or in a flood.
As someone stated earlier it was NOT and edited version it was an excerpt from the full video. BIG difference.
Good read. Thanks for posting
How was the tape edited? Did somebody add something she did not say? I watched the tape and did not see anything except what she said. If she said more later, that is fine, but it does not mean that somebody deliberately edited or distorted what she said. She said what she said. I always stand by what I have said or I do not say it.
I particularily enjoyed reading about the bipartisan support for this bogus lawsuit.
Grassley and Obama, feeding at the same trough, mmm, what a mental picture.
i like jack too it pisses me off when u cant get the story straight.
Sherrod’s husband and Stokley Carmichael ~ Perfect pals.
The real story of this incident is how the NAACP audience clapped and showed their approval when Shirley Sherrod told them how she had withheld support from an individual based on race.
How many times has that material been shown on the SRM, compared to, say, the number of times the Rodney King footage was shown.
Actually if I recall correctly the claims related to the period in the 1980s beginning in 1981. Reagan eliminated the Office of Civil Rights within the Department of Agriculture and the class action lawyers saw their opening.
It should never have been certified as a class action because whether a particular farmer was discriminated against can only be determined on a case-by-case basis. It was not surprising that the Clinton administration decided to agree on a settlement with the class action lawyers as it allowed them to make payments from the US treasury to a demographic that strongly supported Clinton and make the Reagan administration look bad.
This was my first thought upon hearing how quickly Sherrod was fired. I also thought that TPTB were not so much afraid of the one video clip, but afraid that once it aired, there would be much, much more to come.
Dear Jack: An excerpted tape is not the same as an edited tape. Thank you.
Most important bit in this piece. And the Administration claims they knew nothing about Shirley Sherrod?
I'm beginning to think the Sherrods could become the gift that keeps on giving.
