Posted on 08/06/2010 2:00:56 PM PDT by maggief
Let's stipulate: A five-star resort on the Spanish Costa del Sol was probably not the first choice of White House spin-meisters for a mother-daughter getaway. Especially when the getaway included a posse of 40 friends of the first lady staying at the Hotel Villa Padierna, where rooms start at $330 a night, and photos of Michelle Obama strolling in Marbella wearing an off-the-shoulder number by Jean Paul Gaultier.
"The first lady is on a private trip," said White House press secretary Robert Gibbs. "She is a private citizen and is the mother of a daughter on a private trip. And I think I'd leave it at that."
Technically, the first lady may be a private citizen. In actuality, she isn't. She can't be; see, for example, the Secret Service contingent that accompanies her, private trip or not private trip. This is a simple fact of modern presidential family life.
So as a political matter, the trip to Spain was not a good idea. You don't need Dick Morris -- who famously polled the Clintons' vacation plans and pushed Jackson Hole over Martha's Vineyard -- to tell you it's not going to play well at a time of 9.5 percent unemployment.

If SHE”S PAYING for it, then fine.....but it STILL LOOKS AWFUL MARIE ANTOINETTE-LIKE!!
Ruth Marcus is married to some big Lefty either in the Govt or the media.
Has Marcus been drinking? Just the other day she wrote a column saying how out-of-touch the Obamas were becoming. Now she writes this. I guess someone got her back to writing the party line on the Obamas.
“40 friends of the first lady”
We want names.
It would be a nice touch of Michelle has thrown dimes to the peasant children.
Over eight years, not eighteen months. And I'd bet all 77 trips together cost less than this "party for 40" that MarieAntoinetteMaBelle's on.
where rooms start at $330 a night,
Right, like queeny would deign to stay in a broom closet.
The Obamas’s don’t seem to know that we’re in in an economic mess. Any TINY effort on their part would be greatly appreciated if they could just keep down their absurd spending. Less holidays, less parties, less celebration. CUT THE SPENDING, CUT THE SPENDING
The comments are pretty funny. Look for the one by SandySteiner1.
They still think they deserve to live the high life
She has that radical feminazi look.....ugh!!!! Not a surprise that she would lick the ONE’s boots. A little like Kagan. I usually wouldn’t comment on physical looks, but it is their souls shining through....
One thing about the O-bomb-a family, they know how to spend taxpayer money regardless of economic circumstances in the country. In addition they do it with an arrogance that is breathtaking.
...the media treat them like royalty, awwwww shucks, its only a million here, a million there. Its tiny. Quit your complaining you plebs
She has to take her top off on the beach like Spanish women do to fit in down there. Then I will pay some sort of attention with pictures.
What a canard. The Crawford ranch was set up to allow Bush to do the nation's business while he was there.
Jon Leibowitz was designated to serve as Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission on March 2, 2009, by President Barack H. Obama. Leibowitz was previously sworn in as a Commissioner in September 3, 2004, following his nomination by the President and confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
In joining the Commission, Leibowitz resumed a long career of public service. He was the Democratic chief counsel and staff director for the U.S. Senate Antitrust Subcommittee from 1997 to 2000, where he focused on competition policy and telecommunications matters. He served as chief counsel and staff director for the Senate Subcommittee on Terrorism and Technology from 1995 to 1996 and the Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Justice from 1991 to 1994. In addition, he served as chief counsel to Senator Herb Kohl from 1989 to 2000. Leibowitz worked for Senator Paul Simon from 1986 to 1987. In the private sector, Leibowitz served most recently as vice president for congressional affairs for the Motion Picture Association of America from 2000 to 2004 and worked as an attorney in private practice in Washington from 1984 to 1986.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Wisconsin with a B.A. in American History (1980), Leibowitz graduated from the New York University School of Law in 1984. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar, and has co-authored amicus briefs before the U.S. Supreme Court on issues ranging from gun control to the census.
He lives in Bethesda with his wife, Ruth Marcus, and his two daughters, Emma and Julia.
Who else worked for Paul Simon???
Running all over the world requires a hell of a lot of advance planning and staff, going to your ranch is just that, going to the ranch
The obamas are like lottery winners with out one once of sense or forethought.
Laura Bush walked down the concrete boat ramp at Almeda Park with four lifelong friends from Midland, Texas, to begin a three-day raft trip down the wild and scenic Rogue River. We travel together all the time. We love national parks, and we like to do rivers too, Bush said. Weve been adventurous all our lives.
Brad Niva, owner of "Rogue Wilderness" is the company taking Bush & company down the wild and scenic Rogue River. Niva said the company kept the trip quiet for a few months for Bush's sake. "We are very pleased and excited to have her choose Grants Pass and Southern Oregon as her vacation destination." Soon they were floating down the Rogue through Almeda and Argo rapids, heading for the Rogue Rivers' wild section. "We're just thrilled to be here," Laura Bush said. Laura Bush's next stop: Crater Lake National Park.
She must have found the new meeting place for the Journolistas.
Marcus met her husband in the classic Washington way: She was covering the Supreme Court nomination of Clarence Thomas and he was working for a senator on the Judiciary Committee.
Her husband, Jon Leibowitz, is a Democrat who is now (having been selected by President Obama) chairman of the Federal Trade Commission.
Normally, I wouldn’t care.
But these are the same people that told everybody else to take their vacations on the Gulf of Mexico.
And also it’s incredibly politically tone deaf. It wouldn’t be so bad if it cost the taxpayers so much money at least if that money was being spent here in the US, instead of abroad.
I’m certainly past tired of these media pukes making up excuses for dear leader and his frau. How in H can she “stipulate” that it was not the first choice of WH to stay in a 5* hotel?! It is probably exactly what happened. M-My-Belle probably summoned up her ladies in waiting to fetch her some travel literature, went through it and said I wanna stay in the best GD hOtel in the country, and I want the executive suite, and 30 more de-lux rooms for my secret admirers. Every thing these people have done is ostentatious (but de classe). They’re like kids in a candy store. I want this, I want that...
Good grief! I guess it’s a male thing, but I can’t imagine anyone wanting to look at ms obammy’s boobs.
President Bush spent the majority of his vacations at his own home in Texas. Big difference. Not that the Obamamedia would ever admit it. This is why nobody trusts the Obamamedia.
Rooms at Crawford Ranch are $300 a night?
Miss Poo Poo speaks and tells us we have no right to speak.
I'd think that the paparazzi would be all over this and that Spanish, UK and US tabloids would be combing the pics to ferret out just who has been deputized.
"Let's hear it for the Rainbow Tour..."
FTC Governor???? Yikes.
The operative word there is HIS ranch. Housing costs the US Taxpayers nothing. Do the Obama's own the Ritz in Spain?
Anybody know if Ruth Marcus is a member of JournoList?
The difference is that Bush actually went HOME (and still WORKED) whereas the Obama's are jet-setting all over the globe, and mostly at taxpayer expense, while doing nothing else except partying.
Not to mention that Pres. Bush ‘owned’ the ranch and was not paying nightly rates to stay there on our dime. And he sure as heck wasn’t dressed in designer clothes. It’s a ridiculous comparison.
George W. Bush made 77 visits to his ranch in Crawford
Over eight years, not eighteen months. And I’d bet all 77 trips together cost less than this “party for 40” that MarieAntoinetteMaBelle’s on.
George furnished quarters for the Secret Service, personally prepared BBQ’s for his guards and staying in his own home, and with his wife present, didn’t charge the government any funds for occupying his own quarters.
Can the Clinton’s or Obama’s say that? I didn’t think so
Yep. Looked like Marcus really stirred up a hornets nest. Bet she wishes she had left well enough alone. Reminding folks yet again of the arrogance of Our Royal Family is not good policy for the team.
Ya know, if Journolist was still operational, Marcus may have not made this blunder.
Married to who? KAGAN?? She’s as “alternative lifestyle” as they come; possibly closeted yet has the hots for MEEchelle.
A private citizen eh? Since when? A private citizen on the very public dole.
If she is on a private trip why are we paying for it she will meet with the King of spain and there fore turn it into business and we pay for it you can’t have it both ways girly boy gibs
All that money that has been used to set up security at his Chicago home, and he’s spent maybe 5 to 7 days there over the past 18 months.
What recession? I’m still making my six figures.
Why don’t you crybabies just find a job and lay off the First Lady? It’s only a few hundred thousand dollars of your money. Don’t you think kids should have the experience of a European vacation?
You stupid little people just don’t understand our greatness.
