General Motors will invest $500 million to produce a new vehicle and eight-cylinder engines in a plant in northeastern Mexico, a company spokesman said on August 4.
The decision was announced at a meeting on August 3 between GM management and Mexican officials, the spokesman said, without giving details of the new vehicle.
The investment in the GM plant in Ramos Arispe, Coahuila state, would generate 390 jobs, he added.
General Motors has been present in Mexico since 1935, where it has some 11,000 workers, four factories, an engineering center and a test circuit.
Great use of our money, welfare queens.
Obama hates the American worker.
Is this what is meant by GREEN JOBS????
So the United States government is a (or the) major shareholder in this company, and does not use that influence to insist the plant be opened here, where we have actual unemployment in high double digits? Does this make ANY sense?
This would make a great question to any democrats who have the cojones to have town halls this month.
I wish I could stop “giving at the office” for this crud.
If it wasn’t for the corruption and the drug cartels, Mexico would make a helluva economic paradise. The people have a strong work ethic and the climate is perfect. I don’t blame companies for moving. Our corporate taxes are high, too many regulations, and the people have a gimme-gimme-gimme mentality.
“... eight-cylinder engines ...”!
You mean after all that hype about the Volt ..... I coulda hada V8?
Maybe this is how he plans to deal with illegal immigration. Make Mexico more economically viable than the US so they all return. (No I wasn't serious)
“General Motors will invest $500 million to produce a new vehicle and eight-cylinder engines in a plant in northeastern Mexico, a company spokesman said on August 4. “
“Despite President Obama’s pledge to retain more hi-tech jobs in the U.S., a federal agency run by a hand-picked Obama appointee has launched a $36 million program to train workers, including 3,000 specialists in IT and related functions, in South Asia.”
Hmmmmmm...there is a trend here ... all for thee and none for we.
Subtitle: GM quality expected to decrease.
Ford, GM and Chrysler has had assembly plants in Mexico for DECADES .. so under the Fuhrer and the UAW .. no difference.
Good thing we bailed out GM!
Jobs Americans won’t do?
Just doing the jobs Americans won’t.
Obama owns GM, GM goes to Mexico with our tax dollars. Great!
Incidentally, Mexico’s unemployment is around 5.4%, we’re at 9.5% +. But illegals keep coming because of the welfare. STOP THE WELFARE TO ILLEGALS!
Heh good one
Strange that when Mexicans “immigrate” to the U.S. they acquire the same mentality.
Obozo, Chairman of the GM board, was instrumental in this marvelous decision.
GTHUPOS!
Can we send them about 11 million workers to staff that plant? I’m sure they’d feel “right at home”.
390 Mexican jobs created or saved...
My current employer has long had most of its manufacturing in Mexico -- and believe me, it is strong on quality.
I've seen, second-hand, what happens when things start to slip and believe me you don't want to be *anywhere* around when that happens. Even if you're "merely" one of the designers, expect multiple and extended trips across the border.
The old pre-acquisition facility back East never knew they had it so good.
The losers here are the unions. They got greedy, too bad for them.
This is Obama’s way handling the illegal immigrant problem.
If he can create enough jobs in Mexico, all the illegals will go home to take those jobs.
Absolutely brilliant...
But, wait a minute. If they’ve all gone back to Mexico, how’re they gonna vote for him in 2012?
Another well thought out plan by BHO...
Well, they're not jobs for Greengos in the UAW guys who own a huge chunk of GM. I wonder how the retirement benefits for UAW folks compares to the retirement benefits of those in Mexico? You guess the Mexican benefits include all the same Viagra and Spa treatments?
Regards
“eight-cylinder engines “ - as a backup for the VOLT I presume...
Well then Americans can jump over the southern border and work at GM with their own illegal status. Do they get free Mexican healthcare too?
Am I missing something? GM is now government controlled, and yet it is opening a plant in Mexico (of all places!) when American unemployment numbers are sky high? That sheriff in Arizona is right: The government IS the enemy!
In other news reports it was stated the new Mexican V-8 engines will run on crystal meth.
“Do they get free Mexican healthcare too?”
Free Healthcare?
To get that Mexicans swim the Rio Grande......
Government-Corporate outsourcing! More fodder for November!
GM supposedly paid the gov’t money back and now a huge investment in Mexico... Where are they getting all this money? Anyone know?
Our tax dollars creating jobs .... in Mexico.
Thanks, Obama.
GM is also donating heavily to the democrat party. They have a new world order, north american union making-money making machine in GM.
Thank the “free traders” for this course of events.
Got a mirror?
Guess we’ll have to go to Mexico if we want jobs.
Too bad Mexico’s immigration laws are so harsh.
If it keeps the mexicans in their own damn country, maybe its not such a bad thing.
It will keep only 390 of them there.....
How long until the People’s State of Mexico nationalizes it?
and the union is okydoky with it...???
Sure, the American taxpayers bail out GM, and then they snub us for us helping to rescue their company by building a new factory in another country. GM just gave the finger to American taxpayers!
U.S. automakers expand in Mexico, but do it very quietly
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/20/business/worldbusiness/20iht-mexcar.2254475.html?_r=1
“...The expansion, being fueled by Mexico’s top five automakers - General Motors, Ford Motor, DaimlerChrysler, Nissan and Volkswagen - stands in contrast to the plans by GM and Ford to cut 60,000 jobs in the United States and close two dozen North American plants through 2012.
The reason for Mexico’s new wave of growth is twofold: it is close by the world’s largest auto market, allowing greater production integration because auto companies can ship cars and parts by truck and rail rather than on freighters, as they must do from Asia.
And it is still cheap to operate here compared with the United States, where unionized workers earn at least $27 a hour and benefits can double or even triple the total cost. By comparison, Mexico’s typical auto industry wages of $3.50 an hour for experienced workers look like a bargain.”
LOL!
LOL!
LOL!
Not surprised....
I bet one little sneaky secret is that GM wants to avoid expensive contracts with UAW union leadership. Ahhhh but shhhhhhhhh!
The ‘government’ wants to make sure that Mexico’s economy is inextricably intertwined with ours so that it can suck the life out of our domestic economy,
That is the free traitor way, and the method the globalists will use to fuse our nation with Mexico.
Since GM is the government now, and we know how much the government loves unions, your argument is nothing but a distractor from the truth.
