Mosque building owners nixed $18M offer before taking $4.8M one
NY Post ^ | September 5, 2010 | ISABEL VINCENT and MELISSA KLEIN

Posted on 09/05/2010 4:11:39 AM PDT by Scanian

The original owners of the Ground Zero mosque site mysteriously spurned dozens of higher bids before selling the prime downtown real estate at a bargain-basement price.

The Pomerantz family, which had owned the building since the late 1960s and fielded offers after the patriarch died in 2006, rejected at least one bid that was nearly four times what prospective mosque builder Sharif El-Gamal eventually paid, The Post has learned.

El-Gamal did offer what could be viewed as a sweetener to his $4.8 million bid in July 2009 -- a job as a property manager for a son of the family, Sethian Pomerantz

New York developer Kevin Glodek was livid when he found out the building sold for a fraction of what he offered in 2007 -- $18 million cash -- and wondered whether money changed hands under the table, according to sources close to the deal.

Property tax dodge sounds logical...but why is Bloomberg so adamant about this location? And why would he overlook this financial irregularity? Unless he is in on the deal...

"(The GroundZero Mosque) cleared its final hurdle ….
developers plan to build the $100 million center which will include a mosque.
Since its incipient stages in July 2009, when a Muslim-run real-estate development
company purchased the damaged, vacant building and land where the new center
will be built, the project has sparked controversy and debate.
.... the tattered building that was bought by the Muslim real estate company had
been owned by a subsidiary of Bain Capital, a company Romney founded in 1984.

So it’s OK if his company can profit off the sale of the land ."

I was puzzled by that price, too, even in a down market. The name of Pomerantz’ widow, who was the final owner who sold for such a low price, is Kukiko Mitani. This sounds to me like a Japanese name, so she’s probably not a Muslim. In that case, there must be some other angle, perhaps, as suggested, a tax dodge of some kind.

All that needs happen is some enterprising AG dig around and see if the widow deposited cash somewhere at the time of the sale. Money hides,it never disappears(heard that on a t.v. show). That will give the apologists like Bloomberg And zero the cover they need to reverse course.

Names are irrelevant in islam.

Their names change w/o going through the normal format that civilized people use because our laws are superseded by islamic law.

Just a small point.

They do it all the time in foreign countries, put a low figure on the deeds price that is taxed and the rest gets bunged under the table.

That extra cash will have been bunged in some swiss bank account somewhere or in the caymans.

It smells to high heaven.

Maybe something other than monetary? Like political contributions to certain causes, charities, etc. ? I don’t have the answer but Bloomberg seems extreme in his support in view of all the evidence that this is not a clean deal. I think a good start would be not only an investigation into the property deal and financing, but into Bloomberg himself.

There’s definitely something wrong here. Taxes are very likely, especially since she was Pomerantz’ widow and had inherited the estate, possibly in the form of a trust, in which case she might have had to pay capital gains taxes that would have been higher than whatever she stood to make. Or maybe there was some other money in a side deal that was funneled off to something else belonging to the widow in a way that would have been below the tax radar.

I am wondering if the Democrat Attorney General Eric Holder might not be better rewarded to investigate this case, rather than Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Maricopa County in Arizona. A high ranking Republican New York City Mayor would be a better political victory than a lowly County Sheriff...

Bloomberg is no longer a Republican. He originally was registered as a Democrat, then decided he wanted to run for Mayor but the Democrat primary was crowded, so he changed his registration to Republican, where competition was much less in the primary. After Republicans became unpopular (around 2006), Bloomberg changed his registration to Independent. Currently, he has his face up Obama's a**.

Whatever his party registration this week, Bloomberg is still a much bigger target for the Attorney General than a county sheriff in Arizona.

He may be a big target, but not for Democrats. The Democrat leaders here (in NYC) are in lockstep in support of the GZ mosque (with a very few exceptions). It’s the Republican candidates for office who have come out against it.

There is very little chance that a Democrat Attorney General (either NY or US) will want to investigate Bloomberg.

I hope you are right. The Republicans will need to take the lead. In NY State, the current NY Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo, has come out in favor of the GZ mosque and he is heavily favored to be elected Governor. The US State Department is heavily involved with the Imam for the mosque, paying for international tours for him and his wife and buying up $1,000’s of dollars worth of his books.

The publicity surrounding this mosque may become so unsavory that Obama & Co., plus Cuomo, are forced to throw this Imam under the bus and Bloomberg along with him, but that will take a lot of doing.

Perhaps others are hesitant to say this, but if they try to build the mosque at the site near Ground Zero, there will be civil unrest like never seen. It will come from every side, and the proponents can scream freedom of religion all they want but the problem will never go away until they choose another site.

Yes. I agree that will happen. And maybe, even in NY State, enough pressure will accumulate to force Cuomo to backtrack (because Cuomo is a spineless opportunist); and then the pressure will keep building as more details keep coming out until something is eventually done to settle Bloomberg’s hash.
