Obama Won’t Extend Bush-Era Tax Cuts to Wealthy
NY Times ^ | 9/7/10 | Jackie Calmes

President Obama will rule out on Wednesday any compromise that would extend the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy beyond this year, officials said, adding a populist twist to an election-season economic package that is otherwise designed to entice support from big businesses and their Republican allies. Related

Mr. Obama’s opposition to allowing the high-end tax cuts to remain in place for even another year or two would be the signal many Congressional Democrats have been awaiting as they prepare for a showdown with Republicans on the issue and ends speculation that the White House might be open to an extension. Democrats say only the president can rally wavering lawmakers who, amid the party’s weakened poll numbers, feel increasingly vulnerable to Republican attacks if they let the top rates lapse at the end of this year as scheduled.

Dang! I must have missed the recovery during my 15 minute power nap with my head on the keyboard a couple of hours ago.

You took a "power nap" -- that was your error.

No recovery for you.

What are they talking about? For four years the Dems and media have told us only "the wealthy" got the Bush cuts, so there aren't any cuts for ordinary people about to expire, right?

The Republican should call their bluff and say extend all the cuts or let them all expire - no middle ground.

Raising taxes when trying to start an expansion out of a severe recession is economic suicide. Idiots.

What I would love to see is every small business owner that earns over $250K fire an employee to make up the personal tax increase...then do a press release stating why that firing occurred.

I certainly do not want to see anyone losing a job. But clearly they will with this wrong-headed nonsense that Zero keeps pushing. I think your idea is excellent, place the blame where it belongs. I have been hired by very rich people, moderately rich people and once an upper middle class person who ran a small business and paid me poorly with no health benefits (but I loved the job). I have never been hired by a poor person and I wager a bet that no one else has either. It is time to drive home that message to the masses. This blame the rich garbage is wearing thin. There are no equal outcomes no matter what the situation.

In all honesty, I no longer fear the collapse, I wish for it. It’s the only cure for what ails this country.

I don’t want to fire anyone either....but as a small business owner and physician, I’m getting hit from all sides here. The government is increasing my taxes, cost of employing people, and reducing my income...something has to give.

Employees of small businesses need to know that small business owners don’t necessarily get up in the morning and take risks with their capital just so that they can take a vacation in the summer or have health care. While I am happy to employ someone to further MY business goals and aspirations, my employing them is NOT my most important reason for working and owning a business. Like most small business owners, personal taxes are a cost of doing business...and if my costs of doing business increase, and I cannot increase the price of services rendered, then I AM going to look to decrease the cost of my service provision...and my number one cost of service provision IS personnel costs.

After November's spanking a Smart House leader should create a bill that has money in it to feed poor Senior Citizens and Children and then attach More Tax cuts for everyone in ALL income tax brackets.

Also in the bill is an across the board 10% Reduction in ALL spending including (and especially) Congressional and Congressional staff paychecks and everyone else who works in the government, Union Workers included, though all Military personnel would be excluded.

Then he should sit back and cross his arms and dare Obama and the Democrats to oppose it.

Fellow small business owner too - I know EXACTLY what you are feeling. The Obama team has NOBODY who has done what we do and therefore they have absolutely no clue, particularly when The One is a proto-Marxist.

That is a great idea....one that I’ve spoken to many around these parts.

The first act of a Republican Congress should be to reduce by 10%/yr the budgets of EVERY federal agency for 5 yrs, with the secondary goal of eliminating completely agencies such as the department of education, energy, labor, interior and agriculture. Stop every penny of foreign aid. Eliminate all corporate taxes, which they don’t pay anyway, and watch business expansion explode. Defund or repeal Obamacare. Establish a pseudo-flat tax with 2 rates: 10% and 20%...10% on income less than $200K and 20% of income over $200k and EVERYONE PAYS. If every one VOTES, then EVERYONE pays for the privilege. Seize the assets of ANYONE here illegally and deport them to their country of origin...make the program self-sustaining.

Ahhhh...who am I kidding.

While I agree that the Obammy administration has no one that has done what we do (i.e., run a business), I think that they know EXACTLY what they are doing....ruining the foundation of America, which is business.

They know the reason no one is hiring right now...which is because no business owner knows what the cost of employment is going to be going forward or what the business environment will be in 5 years moving forward in the states. They have the ability to extract political capital from the unwashed masses by blaming banks, business owners and putting forth ridiculous proposals to ‘increase capital’ to small businesses and allow capital expansion ‘tax free’...NONE OF THAT MATTERS.

Businesses have capital to expand, but will not until they can reasonably ascertain what the future holds. Look at my business for example...how can I hire, when I have NO IDEA what the ObamaCare mandate will a. reimburse me and b. cost me per employee. No way I hire now.

But don’t sell Obammy’s team short...to say they don’t know what they are doing is to give them the credence of ignorance...and I think that is far from the truth.

We're pretty close to being on the same page - I go back and forth between figuring that they are frighteningly ignorant and alternatively that they are affirmatively trying to destroy the country.

No no no...you see this is a new era. An era, as you’ll recall Obama saying, that will be defined by building the economy from the ground up.

The poor, the homeless, the destitute, the debtors, societal dregs who would die of starvation, thirst or exposure but for the grace of others. They are the new backs upon which Obama claims we shall raise all of society. No more will the stock brokers, bankers, doctors, small medium and large business owners, entrepreneurs and inventors be the bedrock of a vibrant economic society. No, no. Not anymore. The new economy will be shaped by the felons, the impoverished and the beggars.

Aren’t you excited now? I know I am!

/s
