VATICAN CITY The Vatican on Wednesday denounced as "outrageous and grave" plans by a Christian minister in Florida to burn copies of the Quran to mark the Sept. 11 anniversary.

The Vatican office responsible for relations with Islam issued a stern statement saying every religion has the right to expect that its sacred books, places of worship and symbols will be respected and protected.

Our military patriotic hero Gen. Petraeus and boots on ground in Afghanistan denounces the move as risking American lives in America and unpatriotic, and our guidance of faith, the Vatican denounces the move as outrageous, grave move, or apostate worth excommunication in more straight words, which the Vatican may say the move is against Christian faith and its purity. I am interested what is the position of Free Republic moderators, and the guidelines on posts and replies which may violate rules depending on how the moderators view the issue. I am also interets in voice of Catholic and Protestant fathers and priests about the denouncing of the move from Vatican on this issue, which support of the Dove World Outreach Center may be denounced as apostate from the Vatican, and also interested in voices from our troops about Gen. Petraeus that denounced as risking American lives in Afghan, which might also be sought as traitors and unpatriotic from our brave patriots fighting in Afghan.

Seems like book burning is a lib thing to me, why risk inflaming the nutjobs, who already dont need an excuse. Burning books, banning books, thats what the Marxist does... We dont need to ban the Coran or burn it to protest it... it does that all on its own.

I'll take the Pope seriously on this when he stands up to the Saudis and demans that they allow the building of a Catholic Church and a Synagogue in downtown Riyadh.

By the way I may have missed it but can you share the Vaticans position on the Ground Zero Mosque?

There are several narrow sectarian viewpoints out there advising folks to not burn Korans.

Is that new?P>Now if they were going to be burning Koreans I'd be much more concerned!

If Petraeus stresses over a pastor in Florida burning a few books in a ceremony, and the reaction it might evoke, then perhaps he should return home, as this indicates that he does not understand why we are on the ground in Muslim nations in the first place.

The proper response by Petraeus, if he anticipates violent outburst over Quran burning in Florida, is to PREEMPTIVELY strike at the Muslims who are so inflamed.

The Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue has no special authority to speak for “the Vatican.”

If Benedict came out on this issue, or even the local bishop in Florida, then one could say it was the official voice of legitimate Catholic authority.

The PCID is just another goofy initiative created out of V2 that issues all kinds of ridiculous opinions. This kind of muddled thinking results in, for example, the infamous Koran Kiss of JPII.

Having said all of that, Terry Jones (the pastor) strikes me as a publicity-seeking con man who apparently supports the nutjobs of Westboro baptist church.

We could use a better frontman in defending the West against Islam, a role the Catholic Church had historically done but, due to internal weaknesses and muddled post-V2 thinking, has abdicated that role.

This is a Pastor that may not be doing as Jesus taught; but is doing exactly as I feel. Why do we have to cower in fear from Muslims, yet we must celebrate ‘Piss Jesus’ (An artist’s bottle of urine with a cruxifix in it) or a painting of the Virgin Mary done in Elephant dung?

Comedy Central censores South Park depicting Mohammed; yet has no problem insulting every other religion. They can devote entire episodes mocking Catholics, Mormons or others - but they are cowards when it comes to depicting Mohammed in any manner, shape or form.

The NEWS channels are too cowardly to show the cartoons done in Holland that depict Mohammed wearing a turban with a fuse coming out the top.

The muslims can burn Bibles and trample our flag - but heaven forbid we do something that insults them.

#&*$% that noise. I’ll glady burn a Koran, and put it out with a stream of partially digested Dt. Mountain Dew.

Troops in Afghanistan aside (and must say they have been hated and attacked senselessly before this), please tell me this:

Burning the Koran is different from burning the flag--how? And it is worse than building a victory mosque in our face at Ground Zero--how?

90% of the public voices or more, are stone cold certifiable.

Having watched (or tried to watch) a video of a 12-year-old boy cutting the throats of three Christians in Indonesia (one of them a 3-year-old),

and seeing the celebrating by the adults with him;

(think also of Danny Pearl, a Korean captive in Iraq, and many more)

I find it hypocritical (as well as impossible) for anyone to get upset about someone burning a Koran.

Where is the Vatican’s statement on the Ground Zero Mosque, AND where is the Vatican’s statement on the Greek Orthodox church’s building permit on the Ground Zero location?

The pastor at Dove church should instead plan a service with ceremonial honor killings, beheadings, rape of 9 year olds, slave trading, and car bombings. He could call it “Islam Cultural Awareness and Celebrating Diversity Sunday.”

Why is this story such a big deal? Obama's buds stomp our flag and it is okay. People burn our flag it is okay.

This act is outrageous but why is Obama not speaking up for they're RIGHTS to burn anything with a legal burning permit of course?

Our soldiers die daily for the peoples RIGHT to burn our very own flag.

Betray us blew any future POTUS bid speaking out on this.

Why aren't the media covering terrorists on our soil instead of this? The media and Obama probably set this loon up so they can prove there is THEY'RE NEW WORD— ISLAMOPHOBIA.Then they can carry on allowing Imam dipwad to build a terrorist front mosque at ground zero in full triumph.

The Vatican speaks to Catholics, it is not Catholics making the move to burn the Koran. I do find it twisted though that they try to equate the acts of 911 with the burning of a book.... "cannot be counteracted by an outrageous and grave gesture against a book considered sacred by a religious community.".

While I can understand the Generals position trying to keep soldiers safe I disagree it is unpatriot to burn the book. Like the Vatican he is overstating the case to try to avoid the gruesome outcome that may be the Islam way

The Vatican does not need to take a position on the Ground Zero Mosque. And I’m sure if it did, it’s position would be similar to the Koran burning issue.

And for you taking the Pope seriously, the Church has reached out to the Saudis to help build a church in Saudi Arabia.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/article3571835.ece

Also, there are many churches in Middle-east. I spent a good amount of time in Dubai, Kuwait and Bahrain and attend several churches, which incidentally were first built in the 70s. With the exception of Saudi Arabia, ALL arab countries have and allow all kinds of churches.

I don’t mean to sound like an apologist for the Saudis, but since they consider Saudi Arabia the home of Islam, building a church in Saudi Arabia is akin to building a mosque in the Vatican - not going to happen and rightly so.

I know it’s fashionably in some sections of Freeperland to constantly spew anti-Catholic bigotry, but a little research always helps...

Eh...they coddled the Nazis too.

Why don't you explain that to this Jew who lived through World War II?

A Question of Judgment: Pius XII & the Jews

"What is the case for him [Pope Pius XII]? That in relation to the insane behavior of the Nazis, from overlords to self-styled cogs like Eichmann, he did everything humanly possible to save lives and alleviate suffering among the Jews; that a formal statement would have provoked the Nazis to brutal retaliation, and would substantially have thwarted further Catholic action on behalf of Jews. To the Sacred College of Cardinals Pius XII wrote on June 2, 1943: 'Every word that We addressed to the responsible authorities and every one of Our public declarations had to be seriously weighed and considered in the interest of the persecuted themselves in order not to make their situation unwittingly even more difficult and unbearable.'"

I think they should make 30 foot high models of the twin towers out of copies of the Koran and burn it.

Having watched (or tried to watch) a video of a 12-year-old boy cutting the throats of three Christians in Indonesia (one of them a 3-year-old),

Please don't be judgmental of cultural differences and practices which may be different than than your own.

Celebrate diversity!
