NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The Great Recession ended in June 2009, according to the body charged with dating when economic downturns begin and end. But the news comes amid rising fears of a double-dip recession.
The National Bureau of Economic Research, an independent group of economists, released a statement Monday saying economic data now clearly points to the economy turning higher last summer.
That makes the 18-month recession that started in December 2007 the longest and deepest downturn for the U.S. economy since the Great Depression.

“Recession officially ended in June 2009”
Yeah sure!!! Tell that to the 16% of unemployed Americans.
What convenient timing! They dated the beginning of the recession as Dec. of 2007, just in time to make the news before the election of 2008. Now they’re seeming to infer that Obama’s policies solved the problems, and ended the downturn. Surprise! And I’m sure the Dems are hoping that the news is just in time for the mid-term elections.
Whew! What a relief!
Beertender! Another round of Magic Obama Skittles for me and all my friends!
Depression is when you are out of work.
Recovery is when Pelosi, Reid and Obama are OUT OF WORK!
The Day of Reckoning is a coming in a VOTING BOOTH NEAR YOU!
I must have missed the memo, as well as the millions of folks that have lost their jobs, dreams, treasures, homes and in some cases, even their families.
If all Obama can do is FAIL, he must invent success.
Ridiculous. Obama now has some “scientific” evidence for his economic victory speech today.
This is easy for them to say. They still have their jobs.
