House Republicans just released a draft of their legislative agenda for the next Congress, a 21-page "Pledge to America" that they will formally unveil Thursday morning at a Virginia hardware store.
"The need for urgent action to repair our economy and reclaim our government for the people cannot be overstated," the introduction says.
It continues: "With this document, we pledge to dedicate ourselves to the task of reconnecting our highest aspirations to the permanent truths of our founding by keeping faith with the values our nation was founded on, the principles we stand for, and the priorities of our people. This is our Pledge to America."

I see the ‘full attack’ journolista’s (formerly known as obmatrons) are out, ready to pounce on anything they are told to.
Big Whoop! They are going to cut the $1.4 trillion dollar budget deficit by $100 billion? Pfffffffffffft!!! We are so screwed!!!
Yeah looks like the GOP Groupies have shown up in droves too... just sayin.
How about the “good for the goose” amendment - Congress shall make no law for which the Members, their families or their Aides are exempt.
The comments embedded in this story are atrocious.
That is the sort of thing up with which I will not put.
In the first month. Add one each month. Eliminate three in the second month, four in the third month....
Reading it now. It looks like a good start to me. Excellent in fact. Especially love page 4. They are going to put the brakes on the balding marxist...Sustein and his secretive ‘shove’ regulations. That’s enough to get me excited..plus we all know the congressional investigations are coming if we win. All of the democrat’s abuse of powers, dereliction of duty and high crimes and misdemeanors are going to come spilling out into the public square!
It's going to take a lot more than that to make any difference.
It’s a good thing there’s a lot more in the Pledge than that then, eh?
Ok, now you got me excited!
That's Step 1 of any 12 step program, such as Alcoholics Anonymous. Is there ANY doubt that the vast majority of our overlords are addicts?
Weasles... typical compromise on principles.
If they want to spark a recovery, it should have read, "We will eliminate corporate income taxes."
Sorry. I am expressing my opinion.
Absolutely agree! Nothing needed to be done or said at this time. The dummies were hanging themselves, without any help from the pubbies!
I thought so. I could not understand it. It made no sense. Do you like it or not?
Has anyone else been watching the La. judge impeachment hearings on capitol hill on CSPAN? I’ve seen some pretty heavy hitters watching it too. I wonder why? (wink)
Could you possibly speak up a bit? I’m having trouble making you out.
Maybe you could use a larger font? Or turn on the “bold”? That might help.
“We will finally see how they interpretate the Constitution.”
Yup, and one of their other planks is to replace one national health plan with another of their own making. Wonder how they’ll justify that on Constitutional grounds?
Nope! That almost deserves and resounding amen.
What’s this “almost” business? In your heart, you know I’m right!
It looks and sounds a lot like the last contract with America, that worked out real well for conservatives.
And it is from the GOP, they wouldn't be at all worried about their powerful, good paying jobs would they?
a bit long-winded though. I liked Newt’s better. It cut to the chase without putting people to sleep.
Actually I wasn’t sure if you would be offended by my inclusion of a straight-forward religious declaration in jest.
That’s why I mentioned it the way I did.
I would like to see them enact a law that would require congressional approval for ANY regulation that would affect the people outside of the agency proposing it.
Well, I suppose you cant top perfection.
Save the nation first, work on our prose soon after.
We should let them know... There is still time to tweak it.
- Stop job-killing tax hikes
- Allow small businesses to take a tax deduction equal to 20 percent of their income
- Require congressional approval for any new federal regulation that would add to the deficit
- Repeal small business mandates in the new health care law.
- Repeal and Replace health care
- Roll back non-discretionary spending to 2008 levels before TARP and stimulus (will save $100 billion in first year alone) - Establish strict budget caps to limit federal spending going forward - Cancel all future TARP payments and reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Reforming Congress:
- Will require that every bill have a citation of constitutional authority
- Give members at least 3 days to read bills before a vote
- Provide resources to troops
- Fund missile defense
- Enforce sanctions in Iran
I think this is bad strategy, it gives the Dems a “target” they can tear apart ... and this “target” is vulnerable. This wasn’t needed, the Dems are on the ropes, let them use their own rope to hang themselves. All this does now is give them talking points. It gives the DEMS something HARD to focus upon ... and focus they will. Cute idea, (OLD idea) ... actually a great way to shoot yourself in the foot.
It’s a start. I’d like to see a list of names of those that signed on to this and a promise to listen to their constituents. Also, a promise to resign if they fail to abide by this.
Coward GOP needs to pledge to EFFECTIVELY SECURE (within 6 months) OUR BORDERS WITH THE PROMISED DOUBLE FENCE, Pledge to enforce our immigration laws with NO AMNESTY OF ANY KIND FOR ANY ILLEGAL ALIENS, and pledge NO BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP.
This socialistic agenda was a long time in the making, it’s
going to take a while to undo it. With the oversight of the
Tea party, I hope and pray that the Republicans do the right thing!
Right, the Dems can run on increased spending and higher taxes. Good luck with that. What option do you propose? Hiding under the covers?
I don’t like this:
“- Cancel all future TARP payments and reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac”
They should be abolishing Freddie and Fanny not simply “reforming it”. We are suppose to be pushing back Not simply consolidating Government gains already made.
“Repeal small business mandates in the new health care law.”
They should be repealing the health-care law Not simply reducing its impact.
“- Allow small businesses to take a tax deduction equal to 20 percent of their income”
As to reforming congress if you want real reform they need abolish the incumbency advantage in getting positions.
Congressmen should NOT be rewarded for being reelected a great many times.
I agree with every thing you want them to swear to.
- Allow small businesses to take a tax deduction equal to 20 percent of their income
The word “allow” should not be in that sentence! It is not their money.
It’s a start.
Now how about:
1. Every bill will be read IN ITS ENTIRETY on the floor of the House and Senate. Any elected official who is not present for the entire reading of the bill is ineligable to vote on that bill.
2. All members of Congress shall be required to fully comply with any and all bills that are enacted. No exemptions.
3. Any elected official who is officially charged with a crime while in office shall be prohibited from voting until such offense has been cleared. Any elected official who is CONVICTED of a crime while in office must be removed from office immediately and the state shall elect a replacement.
4. All campaign funds shall be directed to a clearing house (accounting firm) and not directly to the candidate, nor to the campaign fund. The clearing house will verify all moneys are in compliance with the laws of the state, district, or other rules and regulations. Any candidate who is not in compliance, or who takes funds directly or indirectly other than through the clearing house, will be removed from office or otherwise be ineligable to run.
Sorry we don't need any 'stealth' candidates. Say what you mean and mean what you say.
I should add to number 4... Said clearing house will post online all monies given to each candidate including the name of the donor, their affiliations, and the amount given.
It needs to be more specific in many areas. For example BUILD THE DAMNED FENCE ON THE SOUTHERN BORDER. It’s already the law.
I think this is bad strategy, it gives the Dems a target they can tear apart ... and this target is vulnerable. This wasnt needed, the Dems are on the ropes, let them use their own rope to hang themselves. All this does now is give them talking points. It gives the DEMS something HARD to focus upon ... and focus they will. Cute idea, (OLD idea) ... actually a great way to shoot yourself in the foot.
I would propose pointing out the absolute insanity of what Democrats have done ... they have never (ever!) been more vulnerable than they are now ... HUGE MISTAKES, VISIBLE MISTAKES ... just point at them ... point out what they've done AGAINST the wishes of 70% of the people. That's what you build a strategy upon, the other persons' weaknesses and mistakes laying out an exact opposite strategy. This "pledge" was not that .. spending cuts, but NO TALK of reversing the TRILLIONS in debt!. So talking points against the Dems right now is target rich, no need to come up with something that gives THEM something to talk about. Watch them focus on this "freeze it", in the next few days ... the "pledge" will give them next week's talking points. Without it, they had NOTHING TO SAY and THEY should be hiding under the covers! (It's a perfect setup for Alynski's tactics).
And for the record, as EmC at our recent Tea Party Rally and as a 9 Stripe Vertical Flag waver at the front of the 9-12 Rally in DC last week, I certainly don't need to hide under any covers! :-)
I believe the kids use “MC”. :-)
They completely blew it, IMHO. Stay brief and to the point. Be specific and make it clear. This was utter blather.....
21 pages? Puh-leeze......
I might have believed it if term limits were number one on the list!!
