The Kentucky Senate race between Republican and Tea Party favorite Rand Paul and Democrat Jack Conway has tightened considerably, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted Sept. 21-23 for the Louisville Courier/WHAS11.
Paul now leads Conway by a statistically-insignificant 49 percent to 47 percent with 4 percent undecided. The margin of error is 4 points.
Previous polls had mostly shown Paul ahead of Conway, including one conducted Sept. 7 by Rasmussen Reports that put Paul ahead by 54 percent to 39 percent. A previous SurveyUSA poll conducted had Paul ahead by 55 percent to 40 percent.
This is the first time in four months of SurveyUSA polling that Conway has broken the 45 percent mark and the first time Paul has been below 51 percent.
Paul gets the support of 82 percent of fellow Republicans compared to Conway's 72 percent backing from Democrats. Democrats are given a 51 percent to 36 percent edge in SurveyUSA's sampling, although this can be misleading given the conservative nature of the electorate in Kentucky. Paul leads among independents (12 percent of the sample) by 50 percent to 45 percent with 5 percent undecided.
SurveyUSA pollster Jay Leve told the Courier that the reasons behind Conway's gains are not clear.
"Whether that is a result of genuine traction for (Conway), second thoughts about his opponent,or a newly raised consciousness among voters who a month ago were not focused on the contest, I am not sure," he said.
In a story on the race, the Washington Post Sunday noted a stark difference in the campaigns being wage by Paul and Conway, with Paul hitting more on national issues while Conway focuses on state ones and on his record as attorney general.

I think the “tsunami” is over.
I don’t believe these polls. Smells.
Paul is .. Glad I don’t have to make that choice
BS I don’t buy this crap..but after all, don’t forget that there are a lot of stupid people out there..2008 reminded us all of that so anything can happen
It isn’t over. Not even.
Dems’ playbook- “Tell ANY lie to suppress the vote”.
It isn’t over. Not even. You will see tons of misleading polls between now and November. It is one of the Left’s oldest tricks.
Don’t fall for it.
I hope you’re right and that I’m wrong.
It’s not over until we say it is!
If the tsunami is over then We The People will be over and our freedom gone.
My father fought four years in WWII and again in the Korean War. We can sure as Hades fight for our freedom until November 2nd and continue the fight for two years to finish the job in 2012.
What we are facing from this Regime and this Congress is as evil as the enemies our fathers and grandfathers fought in WWII.
What changed? What caused the swing?
I have thought all along that we are counting too many chickens before they hatch.....
There’s a trend emerging from the media and the pollsters. Media: Voters are depressed; won’t go out to vote (that means “us.”) Pollsters: Dems are surging! (get excited Dems, get out and vote!)
If america does not start voting for integrity and traditional values for our representatives, they will get what they deserves and when the collapse occurs I for one do not want to be close to any major city.
We’re DOOOOOOOMED!
The tin foil side of me wonders if these polls, combined with Pelosi and company’s comments about retaining Congress, isn’t a setup to mask massive voter fraud this November.
You may be right. Check out the internal party make up on this particular poll. Hot Air pointed this out on one of their threads today.
