Gov. Christie calls Tyler Clementi's Suicide an 'Unspeakable Tragedy'

Gov. Chris Christie today called the suicide of Rutgers freshman Tyler Clementi an “unspeakable tragedy,” but said he would let Attorney General Paula Dow figure out how to prosecute the case against two fellow students accused of recording him in a sexual encounter.

“Well, first of all, as the father of a 17-year-old, I can’t imagine what those parents are feeling today – I can’t,” said Christie.

“You send your son to school to get an education with great hopes and aspirations.

Christie said his feeling on the case as a father “overwhelms whatever feelings I have as governor” and that he didn’t know how Ravi and Wei could sleep at night “knowing that they contributed to driving that young man to that alternative.”

The two have been charged with multiple counts of invasion of privacy.

To tell the truth I also feel sorry for the kids who did this and have ruined their own lives.

Not to be nit picky but the actual stunt is a felony. Now maybe they can tie a felony crime with a death. I do not know. I would rather them go down that path than “hate” crime because he may have been gay.

I think college dorms as bordellos do not help matters. Christie may want to see about NJ making it easier for dorm roomates to say “hey - I am here to study and get an education.” “Take the sex somewhere else.”

Ravi and maybe Molly committed a felony by broadcasting this to the web. Death in the commission of a felony? They maybe could pile on more charges.

“Ravi” should have just told the kid - no - take it outside. My guess is these “kids” reserve their dorm room for this.

While pulling this stunt was irresponsible, did the culprits even have the faintest idea this guy would have killed himself over it?

Manslaughter is homicide without malice aforethought.

One month at school and his life is over.

A terrible tragedy for him and his family.

Prayers and tears.

Charge them with the felony, absolutely. My point is that the fact the guy killed himself should have no bearing on the punishment. How many people in this same situation would have chosen to kill themselves over it??? I suspect that number would be extremely low.

Yes, but "manslaughter" is only applicable when your actions cause the death of someone else. The two miscreants certainly caused anguish and in the mind of this student terribly ruined his life. But those reprehensible actions did NOT cause his death.

The roommate DID NOT KILL him.
This kid was weak and chose to kill himself.
Don’t conservatives believe in personal responsibility any more?

Sadly it sounds a little like what appears to be the plot of the movie “The Virginity Hit” which is about to be released in theaters if not already out.

I’ll bet the courts will decide that question.

I don’t they’re old enough to be held responsible, what was their intention? It’s obvious it was to torture this poor kid. I hope they live with the consequences of their actions and never know a day of peace. I have a feeling the young man was not their first prey.

“If you kill someone while driving drunk,...”

But they didn’t kill him. He killed himself.

"Are we sure this was the only contributing factor to his decision to end his life, or merely the straw that broke the camel’s back?"

The video was him with another guy.

Boys and girls sharing the same room, what can go wrong.

Its sad and certainly tragic. Our society is dysfunctional an attacking these two ignorant girls isn’t going to solve it.

"How many people in this same situation would have chosen to kill themselves over it??? I suspect that number would be extremely low."

How many people die from being shot with a pellet gun? I suspect the number would be extremely low. Nevertheless, the one poor schlub that takes it in the eye socket and into the brainpan is just as dead.

Just because something that is done intentionally to victimize somebody does not usually lead to death does not exculpate the responsible parties when it does.
