Hey, as a Republican in the office, it IS only a part-time job (no point in even showing up to sign or veto bills), she could’ve spent her whole tenure without leaving North Adams (or Williamstown, wherever she is now). Of course, had the Commonwealth provided a Boston-area mansion, she’d never have had the helicopter ‘scandal’ (frankly, I thought that crap was penny ante — had she been a Dem, they would’ve heralded her as “courageous”). Then again, had there been a mansion, Frank Sargent would’ve dragged out of it and lynched back in the early ‘70s. The angry anti-busing crowd couldn’t find his house out in the sticks.
The Boston press would have deemed her Saint Jane the New Madonna had she been a Democrat, but she really couldn’t handle the small potatoes they were lobbing at her.
