When I first heard the story, I assumed this young man was confused and that an older person had been taking advantage of him, and he was distraught because his roommate filmed him. Then more information came out, and the case suddenly looked very different: This was a young man who reportedly didn’t seem very concerned about privacy.
So, like you, I wonder if something else happened here. Did someone else ask this young man to meet on the bridge? I’m sure the police are checking every angle. If this was a suicide, we don’t know if his roommate drove him to it at all. Maybe something else drove him to it.
Btw, right here in the same state of the Rutgers student, three sons were just shot by their father, and two of them (ages 12 and 18) were killed. That 18yo was a college freshman, too. IMHO, it’s a news story that is far more tragic. They didn’t take their own lives; they were gunned down by their own father. It’s doubtful the national news media will pick up on it (unless the anti-2A lobby starts in on it). But, I’ll bet the news media will be focusing on this Rutgers student’s story for years to come.
Actually, I'd be happy to hear a story about how you can get up on the GW Bridge without having to dodge traffic, and if we have anybody on FR who's ever done that.
Since this didn't end with the gay guy wrapped around an icy fence on a windy winter day, it doesn't have as much cachet.
Regarding computers, the university itself states:
"If you get a laptop, we recommend also getting a wireless interface card. The areas that expect students to have laptops are normally installing wireless networking......... We also recommend getting a security device. Laptops are very commonly stolen, even from residence halls...."
You can find that at: http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/newcomputers.php
Like I've said before, the guy with the camera WALKS AWAY FREE ~ that camera with remote access was, in fact, his "security device".
It’s not nice to repost what the mods have removed! The post probably got a little too graphic in parts. (It was so long, I forgot I wasn’t reading an article, but a post on FR — otherwise maybe I would have caught the problem, too.) But whatever. It’s best to let the mods do the modding.
I appreciate the points made, though, and will be re-reading them more carefully.
Indeed, the defense probably will use that argument. There are a few arguments the roommate and his friend could use against the charges. They might end up walking away with a slap on the wrist; even so, this story will follow them for a long time.
There is a pedestrian walkway across the top level of the GW Bridge. It’s not uncommon to see a bicyclist on the walkway commuting to or from work. Jumping off involves a little climbing but it would take no great afford to jump if that was your goal.
