WASHINGTON — Solar power is coming to President Barack Obama's house.

The most famous residence in America, which has already boosted its green credentials by planting a garden, plans to install solar panels atop the White House's living quarters. The solar panels are to be installed by spring 2011, and will heat water for the first family and supply some electricity.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced the plans Tuesday in Washington at a conference of local, state, academic and nonprofit leaders aimed at identifying how the federal government can improve its environmental performance.

I wonder what company Obama is going to hire to put these solar panels on his roof. I am sure it will be friend that he funnels the money to.

What I want to know is what is the total annual White House energy bill? If we knew that, we can judge this project, because there is a “total energy” alternative that could provide 100% of the White House energy needs, provide 100% security for that energy and essentially take the White House “off the grid”.

No way is the White House paying only $2300 a year in electric bills, its complete gibberish. In 2000, I remember something about the Navy paying for Cheney’s electric Bill at around $186,000 a year. The WH must necessarily be more! These are not just houses but command centers for the President and VP. This is obviously a gimmick by Zero to please the “green” yuppies but the numbers still don’t add up. A $100,000/year bill for the White House makes way more sense. I understand the POTUS is an idiot, but I am still surprised how we easily accept any piece of information without criticism just because it is anti-Zero. I’d rather be legit in my critiques....

Unrelated to the topic, but keeping $100,000 at the end of 20 years actually means that you Lose money because of Inflation. Interest in the bank usually trails the annual rate of interest so in general, putting your money in banks either keeps it or reduces it a little, irrespective of what the actual amount is. The “interest earned from a bank” argument is a red herring. As long as you don’t use ‘arguments” like these with the liberals...

Did you even read the article? Stop coming up with Bad critiques! Its disingenuous to keep calling out the liberals for idiots that they in fact are, but act the Same! We. Are. Better. So act like it! The article says :

“That would save a typical household $2,300 on its electricity bill....”

and then
“But the White House is far from a typical house...”
Can I say, No s**t Sherlock? As I noted before, if the WH’s annual electricity Bill is anything less than $100,000, I would be absolutely stunned...Solar power is way too expensive for an Average house, but for the WH, who knows? Maybe, it does bring down the electric bill or maybe (more likely) it doesn’t but we need to know the actual numbers before we sound off. Good arguments are a habit you know...

Well -
We don’t need to know the exact numbers - for two reasons -

1. Many of us have run the calculations. You see the results in these posts. Solar don’t pay - even with good sun, in high electric cost areas, with 65% government subsidy. On large installations.

Whether the WH uses $2K or $4K or $100K per year makes no difference - it is the cost/KWHr that drives the equation.

Anotehr way to tell? See all of those provate business NOT putting up soalr? If it paid - even with the subsidies that the WH can’t get - more places would have solar.

majority of solar are government buildings - or CA - where they made a mistake with the kickback, and give rebates too large.

Last winter I read an article about how some of the media that works in the White House complained that Obama kept the heat on extremely high. Like at 75 degrees. While he is using these water heating solor panels as a symbol of being green. I am quite certain he does not practice energy conservation.

Actually I do agree that Solar power is in fact far from cost effective as far as the cost per unit goes. I mean there are obvious reasons why we are not all switching to the stuff. I was merely questioning the point of comments about $2300 X 5 = $100,000 or whatever which is not being said in the article in question. The “news” item in question is poor because it relates assorted numbers which are insufficient/irrelevant to make reasonable a basic cost/benefit analysis. So I perhaps came on a bit strong. My apologies for that.

You mean Obama may be one of them "do as I say, not as I do" liberals? Never! /sarcasm

They need to put solar panels on Air Force One. I see that plane fly in and out of Andrews Air Force Base every day. Sometimes 2 and 3 times a day.
Also does anyone know why a Air Tran airplane would be flying out of a military base. I have lived here 30 years and have never seen a public plane fly in or out of Andrews.

Whatever it was, you couldn't track the plane in flight. It went from ATL to ADW, landing at 4:03 AM on 10/4. FL8620. Perhaps a military ferry flight? I don't know.

Flight: (FL) AirTran Airways 8620

Status: Landed On-time

Departure: (ATL) Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

Scheduled: 2:50 AM (runway)

Actual: 2:55 AM (runway)

Arrival: (ADW) Andrews Air Force Base

Scheduled: 4:06 AM (runway)

Actual: 4:03 AM (runway)

My guess would be a military charter flight sending soldiers back to their original bases or home cities. Airtran used the same flight number for a flight to Pope Air Force base yesterday.

The big house?

As long as light is a metaphor for truth, not one ray will penetrate the Obama White Hut.

Actually - the article did say it would pay for itself in five years.

Anyone who knows about solar knows this is just silly. Off by practically an order of magnitude.

Some of us - apparently a few of us - have worked all the numbers multiple times. The numbers are so far off that regardless of what lies are in the article, it still won’t pay for itself. I have sized systems of size similar to WH.

The article is poor. The attempt is just PR, and the whole thing is another Obamacrap.

Just another “Feel good” ooh Ombama is a leader piece of claptrap.

I apologize for being direct - but this is just misinformation for the public - while we have real issues.

By the way - if you want to see real quality eco-friendly house - google George Bush’s house in Crawford. The media will never tell you.
