Pentagon: Elements in Pakistani Intelligence Agency Support Terror
Fox News ^ | October 07, 2010 | FoxNews.com

The Pentagon acknowledged Thursday that some parts of Pakistan's intelligence agency are cooperating with terrorist groups as a new report suggests Inter-Service Intelligence agents are working to undermine U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan. Spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said the Pakistan intelligence service as an organization does not support terrorism, but some elements within the ISI are providing assistance to terrorists.

U.S. officials have raised concerns about whether some members of the ISI "might be interacting with terrorist organizations in ways that aren't consistent with what the government and military are doing," Lapan said. Lapan was responding after a report in The Wall Street Journal that suggested the ISI is pushing the Taliban to keep fighting in Afghanistan, undermining efforts by the Pentagon to end the war. The Journal quotes an Afghan commander in Kunar province who said the ISI is still urging and paying Taliban to fight NATO soldiers. Pakistan's top military leadership is working to correct the problem, Lapan said, but "like any large organization, change is difficult and comes slowly."

"The ISI has done a great deal in fighting terrorism. Some have said they probably have killed more terrorists than any other organization. But we also have some concerns with the strategic focus of the ISI," Lapan said. Lapan spoke as U.S.-Pakistani relations remain strained over the effort to end the Taliban's use of Pakistan as a safe haven to launch attacks into Afghanistan.

Trying to ping you guys before the usual “LETS JUST NUKE EM ALL” crowd spams this thread.

This is a pretty big deal IMHO as now our military has admitted it knows about this. Supposedly our doctrine is to be opposed to state sponsorship of terror anywhere. Yet these guys are doing it against our own forces with our own money!

It would be funny if it weren’t so damn sad.

The blind squirrels in the Pentagon have finally found (or more likely just publicly admitted the long known fact) the nut of Pakistani support for terrorism and the Taliban.

Lol. The CIA could have told the Pentagon this well before 9/11/2001. I’m not sure this is breaking news to anyone who knows anything about Afghanastan.

Talk about stating the obvious.

As some would say...no duh!

But with Obama and his ilk, you have to wonder which "ones" he's talking about and what his definition of terrorism really is. Is it the type from Islamic Jihadists that he thinks we can "absorb"? or is it the United States itself which he believes has terrorized the world and somehow brought i on ourselves as his extreme leftist/marxist background would try and foist on us?

It isn’t new information. Anyone with a history book can read that after the Soviets pulled out the ISI created to take over and has been working with them ever since. My only hope is that publicaly breaking the news is part a of a strategy to break the ISI-Taliban axis. Of course I have very little confidence in this.

At the very least it is now public proof that the Pentagon knows who is attacking our forces. If they don’t act to stop this they should be held accountable.

The only news worthy item in this statement is "The Pentagon acknowledged....", as evident by the statements on this thread. The question is, why did the Pentagon acknowledge it?

"Pakis No Pals of Ours," says Pentagon Spokesman.

I must admit to extreme prejudice. I once lost a whole paycheck betting on the Paki military in their dust-up with India. My stupid bet was overly influenced by their Air Force, which did OK, or rather held its own. But the Indians made embarrassingly short work of their army, which at the time looked like the BEF at Ypres, as did the Indians. The Paki Field Hockey Team was absolutely superb, however. Of course, they are also good at Squash.

They are horrible at loyalty to their allies in West and need a good boot up the Quran, right now.

Us here? Sure this isn’t news to us. Do your friends know? Do you have any friends with family in the military? Do they know? Do you know anyone in a tea party? Do they know? Do you know anyone in congress? Do they know?

I flagged this breaking news because now instead of the conversation being derailed with “Oh EyesUnclouded you crazy news junkie conspiracy theorist quit spoiling our BBQ!” you can point to the fact that the Pentagon has officially said this. How can we as a country make the same, literally the same, mistakes that doomed our efforts in SE Asia only a few decades ago?

The Taliban predicted in 2001 we would pull out and they would just come back into power. Are we going to let that happen? It seems like it. Karzai (who is only in power because we put him there) is making moves to integrate them back into the government! We have announced pullout dates starting next year! We haven’t slapped any kind of sanction on Pakistan!

It isn’t just the Islamists either. China is growing in power and is using its influence on the world stage in increasingly worrying ways. They would love to expand their, already worrying, influence in Pakistan after we leave. After 9/11 happened we said we would do what it takes and all put flags on our cars. I’ve looked around. 90% of those flags are gone and now we are just going to walk away and put the Taliban in charge again? What about people who lost limbs and/or life over there? Sorry? Better luck next time?

This should be as big, if not bigger, an issue than spending or tax cuts.
