AUBURN — A former Cayuga County resident’s dream job of becoming a police officer was dashed Tuesday when he was sentenced in Cayuga County Court to shock probation for possessing child pornography. Robert Benson, 25, of 462 Countess Drive, West Henrietta, admitted on Aug. 10 that he downloaded 14 images of child pornography to his personal computer. Cayuga County District Attorney Jon Budelmann said Benson disclosed during a job interview with the Syracuse Police Department that he had viewed child pornography. Police subsequently searched Benson’s house and charged him with possessing a sexual performance by a child, a felony, Budelmann said. Dale Yates, Benson’s lawyer, said the conviction cost Benson his fiancee, his dream job and his reputation.

How stunned was the interviewer when this bonehead admitted to the child porn? So awkward. Like a scene from The Office, but worse.

Imagine, if they’d never asked him this question...he became a cop...and spent forty years in the “profession”. He would have continued his hobby for that entire period.

This reminds me of another case where a burglar stole his neighbor’s possessions and then tried to sell the swiped stuff that a yard sale two blocks down the street.

File this article under World’s Dumbest Criminals.

That crap is everywhere. When I got my first RV, I was looking for a site specifically related to the Travco motorhomes. To my surprise, the site opened with a porn picture.

I uded the DELETE button and carefully retyped the web address. It again popped up on my screen. DELETE ! ! !

The third time I types each character one by one and verified each one before proceeding to the next character. ENTER ....

Not Again! DELETE!!!

I then got in contact with the man who gave me the web address. He laughed and said I had confused a small “L” with the number “1”.

That made all the difference. Travco images came up, not porn images.

Moral: Thanks to the police state mentality you can become a felon by mere typo.

Isn’t living in the Liberal, post structuralist, United Police States of AMerica wonderful?

Seems to me there are some folks we don’t need as cops.

Kiddie-porn fans, and abjectly stupid people.

This guy qualifies as both.

Ah, God bless the “Have you ever committed an undiscovered crime, been involved in a crime of moral turpitude, or failed to reveal ANYTHING that could/would reflect negatively upon you to an investigator?” question.

‘Course if the ACLU had their way, these questions would not be allowed to be asked.

There are details missing from this story. Everyone assumes that he was just asked a straight question, and responded that he had downloaded child porn. This may not be right.

They only found 14 images on his computer. If he was a serious child porn guy, wouldn’t you think that he would have more on his computer than that? He is alleged to have downloaded it in August, just two months ago.

So for the first time, two months before he interviews to become a cop, he downloads just 14 images to his computer, then leaves them there. Then he admits to it in an interview.

This does not compute.

I reformatted the disk.

Remember, it is a crime to destroy evidence.

Of course Now I have a tight spam filter an do not open any strange messages ever

Additionally, people who use file-sharing programs like Limewire need to be extra vigilant. There's a lot of nasty stuff that could be inadvertently accessed, even while searching for "safe" files.
