Famous Hitler rally picture probably faked

Published: 14 Oct 10 16:05 CET

A famous 1914 photo showing a young Adolf Hitler in the thick of the crowd at a First World War rally – which the Nazis later used as a propaganda picture – was probably faked, German media said Thursday.

Düsseldorf historian Gerd Krumeich has studied the picture and its history and concluded that Hitler was superimposed to lend credibility to the image of the Nazi leader as a patriot and a man of the people, daily Die Welt reported Thursday.

The photo was taken by Munich photographer Heinrich Hoffmann at a rally in support of war against the allies in Munich’s Odeonplatz on August 2, 1914.

But it was not until March 12, 1932 that it was published in the Nazi party newspaper the Illustrierte Beobachter, or "Illustrated Observer," the day before the presidential election, after Hitler’s opponents had attacked Hitler over his flight from military service in Austria-Hungary and questioned his patriotism.

The caption on the picture read: “Adolf Hitler, the German patriot … in the middle of the crowd stands with blazing eyes – Adolf Hitler.”

The photo went on to become a favourite Nazi propaganda picture, appearing with captions such as “Adolf Hitler: a man of the people.”

Well, this "faked" photo doesn't look particularly faked, and for that matter, if it was faked, it's just about the least convincing piece of propaganda ever made. :')

Thanks grey_whiskers for those other pics.

In the book "The Psychopathic God", there's an anecdote about Hitler's reaction upon first seeing Von Stuck's "Medusa" -- "those eyes, my God! Those are the eyes of my mother!"

Hitler picked up his better known ‘stache style (as well as the haircut, and even that cape that he wore in the Nuremburg rallies) from another von Stuck painting, “The Wild Chase”.

*Funny, I’ve always had some doubts about the famous photo showing a jubilant young Shickelgruber at the armistice announcement. That one face in a sea of others is just a little too clear.

What are you talking about? I see dozens of faces, clearly depicted in the image. *

This is not a photo of a “jubilant” crowd at the announcement of the armistice.

1. The Germans weren’t ‘jubilant’ over the armistice.
2. The armistice was 1918, not 1914.
3. Hitler was convalescing in a hospital in Northern Germany at the time, convalescing after war injuries, and was in no shape to jump around in a crowd.
4. He very well could have been in a crowd in Munich in August 1914, though, he enlisted pretty quickly after the war broke out. The story was that he saw this photo years later and said he was there that day, then they scoured with the magnifying glasses.

PS
*Hitler’s opponents had attacked Hitler over his flight from military service in Austria-Hungary and questioned his patriotism. *

This is utter nonsense. Hitler had been living in Germany for some time prior to 1914. He didn’t want to fight for the HAPSBURGS. He hated Austria-Hungary and wanted to ‘belong’ to and in the Reich, which is why he dodged conscription in Austria but immediately enlisted in the Kaiser’s army.

Not my point. My point was there are plenty of faces, clearly visible in the image, which the other poster apparently could not see.
