I didn’t go into a detailed desertation. For your sake, the boy fell, was still in the water, no, I don’t know where his skiis were. The story was unusual because these huge catfish are usually in the deep water below the dam, and relatively sedentary.
All that’s beside the point, we were having fun telling fish stories.

When I was in middle school we latched on to a big snapper while carp fishing a pond at night. We didn’t know what to do with it either so my friend and I decided to go throw it in our neighbors above ground pool as a prank. A couple of days later my parents were talking to them and they told the damnedest story about this stupid turtle that climbed up the stairs of the deck and went in their pool. As a young kid I thought that was hilarious.

My motto is, “Be properly armed at all times!”.

I was charged by a big bull hippo on the Angua River. He was on a dry river bed and charged the second he saw us. My first shot with a .416 Rem at about 30 feet and hit the point of the shoulder. It had absolutely no effect. At that point I heard a voice in my head which very clearly said, “Serious!, VERY Serious!!” so I made the quickest reload of my life and hit him below the right eye at 9 feet. The bullet went through the brain and down about 4 cervical vertebrae, so I had pithed him like a frog. The whole deal took about 1.5 seconds.

I think hippos are the most dangerous mammal in Africa. However, statistically, you are more likely to get pounded by a polar or grizzly bear variant than any African game.

I never did figure out who, where, what regarding the voice. It was male, calm, unhurried and very distinct but really got me in gear because I was pretty stunned when the first shot did nothing. Never had anything like that happen before or since. If I could figure it out maybe I could get my own TV program on Sunday morning. However, if it was Napoleon, they will lock me up.

"Mystical fish?"

Of course silly. You've never heard of the Mystic River? That's where they live.

;-)

To: FromLori ...they told me sharks could be in it that they could have made their way up from the ocean lol.

That's actually possible. The author of "Jaws" was partly inspired by the true story of a Great White" that swam up a river (I believe, in New York State) and killed and ate a young boy.

Thanks for the info. It was New Jersey instead of New York and there were two casualties.

Holy cow, the 25 lb carp I caught this morning would have been a snack for this fish! I got the carp up on the dock but couldn’t get ahold of it to put it back in the water. Finally had to just scoot it across the dock with my feet to get it back in the water. But catching it was a lot of fun!

When I was a kid on vacation in NE Texas I saw them bring a snapper in as big as a truck tire. It practically filled the bed of a pick up truck.

We lived in a dinky Kansas town. Some of the guys would catch the turtle, and then butcher it. They’re stories of being chased around the boat were a hoot!
I pulled a small one, about 12” across, out of a creek. It’s head looked the size of a baseball...boy, I sent him flying in a hurry!
Fun stuff!

*Yeesh* My tank of Gouramis just crapped their widdle britches and hid under a water lily. We also have an especially cantankerous turtle named Fred in a large tank next to them, and he took one look and dove in with the Gouramis.

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

Some of the best eating I ever had was when some guys fried up some soft shelled snapper tempura style.

Absolutely amazing. It is amazing how time slows down(the mind speeds up)under extreme conditions like that. Are you in Texas? Family and I are from New Braunfels.
