In the late 60’s, I was forced to be a member of the Teamster’s Union to hve an office job.
We were assessed an extra $1 a month in our union dues to pay for Jimmy Hoff’s lawyers—when he was on trial for stealing our union funds. Doesn’t sound like much- but it was just plain wrong.
I never have forgotten that.
I know where I am.
Wonder where Hoffa is?
Union workers voted Sunday to reject a wage freeze and other concessions proposed by Olin Corp., which is considering moving 900 jobs from East Alton to Mississippi to save $30 million a year, the Alton Telegraph reports.
It’s happening. Washington (Boeing); New York (Pfizer).
I’m sure there are countless others.
I know first hand, cause I’m impacted - Pfizer. I don’t mind though, because I look forward to leaving New York State. That statement is a tragedy, because it’s a beautiful state, but the tax burden is just incredible.

Mississippi—the crookedest state in the nation. Got taken for several thousand dollars by a thieving businessman in the Nettleton area south of Tupelo who advertised product over the internet, got paid for it, deposited our payment in his bank account, then “disappeared” and never delivered the goods. Filed a formal complaint with the Mississippi State Attorney General’s Office. Three years later the crook is still in business bilking people out of their money on the internet. The AG’s office has yet to send me one page of documentation confirming my complaint. The case officer is a jerk who stonewalls me whenever I call them. They tell me my case has become part of a class-action suit but there’s never any documentation or resolution. Last communication 2 years ago was that they were awaiting a judge to sign a search warrant so they could search this guy’s business premises. Crooks and thieves in the AG office aiding and abetting crooks and thieves on the street. If I was a legitimate businessman, Mississippi would be the last place I’d want to set up shop.

Wow - Giving up a weeks vacation and a 3 year wage freeze as the main “stumbling blocks” to approving the contract.
As opposed to going on subsistance living on unemployment; possibly having to move your family; start all over at another job that may get you two weeks vacation; zero seniority; saying goodby to friends and family; ETC.
Unbelieveable.
We’ve seen it time and again where unappreciative unionist kill the goose that lays a job at their feet.
Good luck to these fools getting anywhere near what they’ve been use to.
Course the union is going to make it all better.

The union figured that having no jobs is better than keeping their existing jobs. They didn’t think that Olin would call their bluff. Now the former highly paid ammo plant workers will have to enter the non-union controlled workforce and try to earn a living based on their skills and work ethics. Good luck, but don’t apply here, we don’t hire former union employees.
I guess the union dummies had enough ammo laying around the plant to shoot themselves in the foot a few times...
This is good news for the people of Mississippi. Are they somehow less deserving of steady jobs than the people of Alton? It’s time for the labor unions to wake up and smell the coffee. They can no longer hold employers and entire towns hostage. Alton’s economy will plummet farther than it already has, and the State of IL will go deeper in debt just to keep up the unemployment payments. What will the union do for its unemployed members now?
The new Walmart in Godfrey should start hiring soon. Get in line early or just wait until it stretches all the way to East Alton.
You can say I’m white collar, but I’m actually wearing blue today. Yes, I have had to take pay cuts in the past, and health insurance gets more expensive every year. You know what, I’m still working. There is no free ride.
Nick - when the company says “This is our best and final offer, take it or we’ll shut this location and move the company”, they aren’t kidding. Blame your union brothers for screwing you on this one, not Olin. The folks in Mississippi should send flowers to your union.
You know I bet the union still thinks the company is bluffing. I’ve been in two unions and most of the people thought they were to valuable to get let go. Most were very defiant to any thing the boss said.
I’m glad the union hasn’t been permitted to hold up production. I buy a lot of the Winchester value packs for sporting clays.
Better stock up. Since they are moving over several years, I bet there will be sabotage to product and machines by the disgruntled trade unionists.
Saw a similar thing work out differently for MerCruiser workers in WI and OK plants. Union workers in WI voted not to agree to contract, company said work was going to OK, state of WI sweetened the company’s incentives (tax breaks, etc.) pot, MerCruiser allowed the WI union a do-over vote, they agreed to the no-gain contract, and the OK plant is being closed with some jobs shipped to WI.
Watch for a do-over vote opportunity for the Olin workers.
According to one FReeper, there are still ex-AMC UAW workers wondering when American Motors is going to wise up and reopen their plant. :P
