NEW YORK – Amazon is selling a self-published book defending pedophiles, sparking discussions about the retailer's obligation to vet items before they are sold in its online stores.

The book, "The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover's Code of Conduct" by Philip R. Greaves II, offers advice to pedophiles afraid of becoming the center of retaliation. It is an electronic book available for Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle e-reader.

The book has triggered mounting outrage on Twitter and beyond. A chorus of Twitter users is calling for Amazon to pull the book, with a few threatening to boycott the Kindle store until it does.

Amazon did not immediately respond to an inquiry about whether and how it vet books sold in its store.

For obvious reasons, most sex offenders keep their heads down and try not to draw attention to themselves. If any of them want to go blowing their dirty little secrets all over the place by, say, publishing crap such as this, why not let them? It just increases the odds that they'll get caught, and gets them away from their potential victims and into prison that much sooner.

If you can't understand why I'd be opposed to keeping a criminal from outing himself and maybe several others, you must not have very much imagination. If you're really so rash as to go around jumping to crazy conclusions and attacking people so recklessly as you did here, you really ought to hold your tongue and think before you speak; at least then you might seem wise.
