Two Kansas City police officers who thought they were being shot at from inside a van returned fire Thursday night.

Only later did police realize that the van was actually backfiring and the man inside was not armed. He was not injured by the shots fired by police.

Windows of the police car were apparently shot out by the officers as they exited the patrol car.

Good point. If they shot them from the outside going in then that’s an attempt to pervert the course of justice.

Where would we be without these “peace officers”? Good grief.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

This, while apparently funny, does not compute. Windows (plural). How many windows? More than one bullet then. Something smells.

Yep. I got to do a ride-a-long with KCPD back in 1990. I was surprised the number of times the weapons came out of the holsters during the graveyard shift.

But then again, we’re talking about the east side (east of Troost Ave). That shift needs a Bradley fighting vehicle on Friday nights.

Actually the Grandview triangle did play a part in my event of about ‘93. We left a Boy Scout Districk office off 435 & Holmes and made the curve on 435 headed north when about a dozen lights appeared behind me chasing something. I slowed and watched and sure enough, lights-out at double my speed a guy who was escaping Grandview jurisdiction blew by followed by 8 to 12 full bubble-gum patrol cars. Eight miles north, he lost it and ended up mired in the median just south of the I-70 junction — and I pulled up just in time to see him spinning his wheels trying to run over the officers approaching his car with guns drawn. Four guys emptied their clips at less then 20 foot range.

The only way to handle this windshield shooting is to nip it in the bud. NIP...IT...IN....THE....BUD.

Since none of the bullets got anywhere near the van, I'm not sure he knew they were even firing at him,

? I read the article but saw no mention of whether shots hit the van or not. I just assumed since the article assured readers the driver was not hit, that the van at least had been hit. Boy, the image of two officers at close range firing so wildly they can't even hit a large vehicle... confidence this does not inspire...

Nobody calls it the 3-Trails Crossing, will always be the Triangle. I’ll be traveling through there this evening, hopefully with no such incident.

If they can’t tell the difference between shots fired and an engine backfiring, I think they’re in the wrong job.

Whoa, little judgmental there without all the facts.

The part of town they were in probably has shots being fired on a daily basis. Also, there was a kidnapping of a 2 year old in the area by someone in a white van. The cops were on the look out for it.

Some people are just too eager to jump on police officers. Yeah, these guys screwed up, but it probably had more to do with being hyperalert due to the situation than being just plain stupid. I can easily imagine our troops doing something similar when in a hyperalert state. (Ever hear of friendly fire?)

Are you a cop? If not, don't be so quick to judge.

Did any of them hit the car?

Same here. But you would think they would have mentioned it IF they actually hit the van.

This incident happened at 435 and Gregory.

Gregory, just under the 435 overpass, is a known drug exchange point.

Not only that, but the police had received REPORTS from the public of GUNFIRE at that location.

Despite the teasing I have given the officers so far, My best guess is that they were exiting the car, heard the backfire, and squatted down behind the doors. They fired through the windows, not thinking about whether they were up or down, in this sudden and tense situation.

I think they were all on-target --- the purp was hit quit a few times as I recall and pronounced dead at the scene.

I did have my son duck down and floored it to clear the area when I saw what was ocurring.

For those not familiar with Missouri.

The next few days would be a good time to NOT come here and take a walk in the woods or drive back country roads. Deer season opens in the weee hours of tomorrow morning and I think (based upon the number of people that left work early today) about eight bizzilion guys and gals will be out blasting away at first light.
