Latino kids now majority in state's public schools
San Francisco Chronicle / sfgate.com ^ | Saturday, November 13, 2010 | Will Kane, Chronicle Staff Writer

Latinos now make up a majority of California's public school students, cracking the 50 percent barrier for the first time in the state's history, according to data released Friday by the state Department of Education.

Almost 50.4 percent of the state's students in the 2009-10 school year identified themselves as Hispanic or Latino, up 1.36 percent from the previous year.

In comparison, 27 percent of California's 6.2 million students identified themselves as white, 9 percent as Asian and 7 percent as black. Students calling themselves Filipino, Pacific Islander, Native American or other total almost 7 percent.

While the result was no surprise to educators, experts say the shift underscores the huge impact Latinos already have on California's politics, economy and school system.

That influence will only grow as Latino parents - now in the majority - realize many of the schools their children attend are underfunded, said Bruce Fuller, a professor of education and public policy at UC Berkeley.

"It turns upside down how we think about California students," he said.

"A lot depends on the extent to which Latino parents come together and organize," Fuller added. "These are parents who historically have not had much political power. But as they are coming together and feeling their oats, they may organize around education."

Let them make California the crap hole Mexico is. I see they are very proud of the crap hole Mexico has become. Yet they keep wanting to leave that crap hole and come here and spread like locusts.

“A lot depends on the extent to which Latino parents come together and organize.”

So, this Berkely professor now sees nothing wrong with racial segregation.

I think there’s a positive correlation between people who immigrate here legally and people who hold education in high esteem: it has to do with wanting to better one’s lot in life through legitimate channels and hard work.

Every time another (presumed) American posts something like this about California on FR, I’m gonna reply.

How about we give foreign invaders YOUR state?

We are Americans under siege by a foreign country — Mexico. And it’s not a peaceful invasion. Check out the nationality of our prison population.

We have a right to remain in the Union, and we have a right to expect the rest of the country to GIVE A DAMN instead of gassing about cutting us loose and sealing the border.

How about HELPING us kick out the invaders? It doesn’t matter that you don’t live in a border state. You are as responsible as we are for allowing the Federal Government to maintain a wide-open border and a non-deportation policy toward illegal aliens.

Right-thinking citizens are obviously an electoral helpless minority in California, as the recent elections show. You know what could change things in California? A HUGE MAJORITY — THE REST OF THE COUNTRY — DEMANDING THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ACT. We have to put up with it, but YOU DON’T — you’ve got the numbers and the votes. You want to just GIVE the most prosperous state in the union away? How does that help you? How does that forestall what’s gonna happen in YOUR state if it happens unchecked in mine?

It’s like you’re all mad at the Romans instead of the Visigoths who are sacking the city. WTF?

The Mexicans are taking over. They say so themselves. "Reconquista!"

The part that I would never have guessed is the apparent roll over and die attitude displayed by the native Anglo American. We will be the only civilization in history to be conquered solely by means of words; i.e. utter the word "Racist" and instead of peals of Homeric laughter people roll over and die.

My Congresswoman, Rep. Sue Myrick, is opposed to illegal immigration, which is a significant issue in North Carolina. I vote for her every two years. I also vote for Republican Senator Richard Burr, such as he is. What else do you suggest I do to "help" California with its problems?

Be on the look out for...

a 12-year-old assassin who is allegedly employed by a drug cartel to torture and murder its enemies. Known simply as El Ponchis - which means “The Cloak”

Dude! What have you been smoking? Are you saying CA is like Rome?

Hmmm, on second thot, mebbe you got a point: `The Rise and Fall of the Golden Empire.’ Towards the end they negotiated with the barbarians too. Decadent, lotus-eating California.
I’d buckle for Arizona, but not `Rome.’ Move. I did.

If you want to help California, start dealing with North Carolina’s illegal immigrant problem NOW, before you’re as far gone as we are. Just point the finger west and start screaming your head off. We are a horrible warning.

Anything you can do to abate the problem there would help California. When people see that something works, they want it for themselves. One state raised the 55 mph speed limit and others followed. Arizona passed a law — other states are copying it (despite being sued by their own government!)

During the next amnesty push, call every congressman and senator. And write follow-up letters — they read them.

I weigh in non-stop with my voice and my checkbook, and I make it clear that I have one issue only: the presence of millions of illegal immigrants and the open borders. It is the single most pressing issue the country faces. Worse than the economy, the war in Afghanistan, whatever you got. Why is it worse than Afghanistan? Because it’s a war on our own soil. And we’re losing.

What else can you do? How about get fired up about it? The American people are DEMANDING that body scanners, for example, be removed from airports. They are going to be removed.

When we all are equally determined to reclaim American sovereignty — then we can achieve it.

Apparently, you guys in NC aren’t there yet. But you will be.

David Gomez sez, "why shouldn't the white minority also become bilingual?"

Well, No. 1, because this is America and here we speak English. Bilingual? Like German, French, or more ominously, Chinese?

Oh, you mean Spanish? Whose Spanish? As an oil company rep I had one Helluva time being understood all points South, as I was taught Castillian Spanish. In Venezuela I tried to get a pack of cigars by asking for "cigarros". Nobody knew what I was talking about (one guy offered condoms) until another guy said "tabac".

In all of Latin America, Mexican is at the bottom of the linguistic hierarchy because it is "too dirty" (many Indian words). Ecuador is at the top as they are the closest to Castillian.

And Mr. Gomez wants to impose that kind of bilingual chaos on us? This country is not multicultural, it is multiethnic with ONE culture and ONE language.

Best summary I’ve seen of what I have often tried to say in a much less effective way.

Not at all ... great job! The differences between productive Americans of various ethnicities are cultural “decor,” as it were: food, styles of clothing, observance of religious customs. The big cultural differences, as Thomas Sowell has observed, are often inconsistent with being a contributing American.

You are right. I am just frustrated that a large majority of the population with the statist persuasion lives in your state and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. The way I was thinking about California is the same way sections of a sinking ship are sealed off in order to save the rest of the ship. But you are correct. There are other things we can do. One thing we can do is seal our borders and start enforcing our immigration laws the same way Arizona is doing. We can also refuse to bailout California financially out of the hole they have dug themselves into because of their huge public spending.
