Pennsylvania Top 50 Employers Q1 2010
PA Work Stats ^ | 9/24/10 | Center for Workforce Analysis

Posted on 11/13/2010 11:41:30 AM PST by Kay Ludlow

This is PA today - we work for government at some level and our spouses work in the service sector, and we buy food, eat out and shop. No real manufacturers of any kind in the Top 50. With Federal and State Agencies listed separately, 25 of the Top 50 are associated with government in some way (like being part of the State education system). I suppose the chances are thin that the newly Republican State House, State Senate and State Governor will do anything to clean out DCNR and DEP, the agencies that have been instrumental in forcing nearly all maufacturing out of the state. They talk the talk about sustainability, but I just can't see how sustainable it is for a state to have this kind of employment picture over the long run. Our jobs have all been eliminated or exported...

In most cities over 100,000 in population you will find that the biggest employers are the school system and the city’s/county’s biggest hospital.

Whatever happened to the notion of creating wealth by taking raw materials, adding labor + a good idea and creating a product that somebody wants to buy?

Schools as the biggest employer would be ok if our kids were getting great educations, but they aren't...

On the Fruit, Vegetable and Dairy front - they are working to kill that with the 0% pollution to the Chesapeake Bay by 2025 and the no dust in the air regulations coming from the EPA. Apparently our abundant resources are only “ours” for the state to lock up, not “ours” to actually use even though we are deeded land and pay extortionate taxes on that land.

Wow - is there even one manufacturing employer on the list? When I was growing up in Pa it would have included U.S. Steel, Westinghouse, PPG, etc.

Aye, 50 - 60 years ago the list would have included U.S. Steel, the Pennsylvania Railroad, Caterpillar tractor, Allis Chalmers Corporation.

Now all we “produce” are pills and the paperwork to purchase them.

But it is still a valid premise, it’s just that the govt. throws every obstacle in the way of manufacturing companies that they can think of. And large manufacturers are not blameless in that they employ cadres of accountants and engineers who are assigned to find ways to shave pennies off of the cost of each product. These folks seem to turn overseas for paper savings without regard to service and quality control, to say nothing of shipping.

A famous lock manufacturer here just announced that they are pulling their work home from Mexico and China because they found that it just didn’t pay. We bid on some of that work about 10 years ago and made some very fine prototypes for them, but they wanted to send it overseas because that is what everyone else was doing. After a decade of trying to work out the problems, they have decided to bring the work back onshore.

I don’t know if we’ll get the chance to bid on it again, and I don’t know if we want to. Our company has shrunk from what it was 10 years ago, and we are very busy with other work. It’s a thought, however.

I wonder what the trade-off is between cheap labor thousands of miles away and the transportation costs to bring those goods back to the US for sale? I hope we can institute the Fair Tax and get those jobs back in America.

I don’t know the answer to that question. I do know that before we owned our own business, but husband was #2 in a very large gear manufacturing company. His direct labor costs were 6 1/2 % of the finished product. It would be insanity to outsource that work overseas, unless the finished product was to be sold in another country.

They did have 2 offshore locatons, but that was just because those countries would not allow goods built elsewhere to be imported. So, my husband’s company just set up divisions in those countries. However, those installations were always a drag on the company overall. Especially in Brazil during the days of runaway inflation. The Brazilian operation had to be subsidized heavily from here when the money in Brazil was devaluating at a rapid rate.
