Dan Walters: A pent-up agenda awaits Jerry Brown
Sacramento Bee ^ | 11/14/10 | Dan Walters

Consider this factoid of California political history: In the last 70 years, just one governor finished his term of office and handed it off to someone of the same party.

Voters' habit of switching parties in gubernatorial elections has created a cycle. While governors must work with the Legislature to achieve their policy goals, they can unilaterally veto bills and appropriations.

Thus, while liberal interest groups can usually achieve their aims in a reliably Democratic Legislature, they are often thwarted by a Republican governor's vetoes, creating a pent-up agenda that bursts forth when a Democratic governor is installed.

We saw that when Jerry Brown followed Ronald Reagan in 1975. He signed landmark legislation granting collective bargaining rights to farmworker and public employee unions, decriminalizing marijuana, legalizing consensual homosexual acts, and imposing strict controls on coastal land development, to mention only a few examples.

We saw it again in 1999, when Brown's former chief of staff, Gray Davis, succeeded Pete Wilson as governor and repaid public employee unions for helping him win.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has not been a particularly conservative Republican, especially on environmental issues, but has wielded his veto prodigiously on legislation the business community has opposed.

His vetoes have frustrated unions, personal injury lawyers, consumer advocates and even environmentalists on occasion, and they have a huge agenda awaiting Brown's second stint as governor.

California was already ruined before the recent elections.

By putting Moonbeam back in as Governor, the state is changing its course from a clear, steady, accelerating decline to a steep plunge into total disaster.

If you live in California, and if you are an American, get out NOW!

If you live in the other 49 states, DO NOT visit or travel to or through California, if you value your safety, health, and well-being.

The state is going to go from bad to much worse, and will do so quite soon.

Is it too late to have California declared a republic and expelled from the United States?

An exceptionally succinct solution for all parties involved. California may continue to try all the social experimentation they can dream up, and the other 49 states do not have to show any reciprocity.

Of course, border crossings between the rest of the US and California would have to be closely monitored. If a current California resident cannot show credentials that clearly demonstrate their commitment to truth, justice and the American way, and some comprehension of what American citizenship entails in the way of responsibilities first, then they should be turned back at the border.

This one was a goodie.

"If a current California resident cannot show credential"

You forget 'proof of legal residence in the USA.' Just a small oversight!

Response: Translation, hold on to your wallet!

You need to get a life! All this vituperation about California is getting really old! There is nothing constructive in commentary that seeks to isolate California from “the rest of the country.” Or in giving California back to Mexico! Those are just stupid comments which only serve to show the posters ignorance. Sure we are in a real mess, but nearly half of the residents of this once fine state do NOT subscribe to what’s been happening. We were sold out by Schwartzenkennedy no question. Personally, I hope that with the Election of Jerry Brown, we will get to the point of bankruptcy all the quicker. You will note that in the last election the morons here gave the Legislature the chance to pass budgets with a simple majority, but even they were not willing to do the same thing with respect to raising taxes. And now, just after the election our “leaders” have discovered that we are another $6 billion plus in the hole because of “flawed budget assumptions.” Jerry Brown has never had a real job in his whole life, and he has not been successful in his past endeavors (all you have to do is look at his recent tenure as mayor of Oakland). So we will fold, and then the process of rebuilding a once fine state can begin. You who take the opportunity to bash California should all be ashamed. It’s not as though the rest of the country is in much better shape.

Jay W in 2008:
America was already ruined before the recent elections.

By putting Barack Hussein Obama in as President, the country is changing its course from a clear, steady, accelerating decline to a steep plunge into total disaster.

If you live in the United States get out NOW!

California doesn't have the courage to face incurable cancer, so it simply committed suicide instead.

Perfectly logical.

I live in Illinois and am in no position to cast stones.

I got out of California myself a couple of years ago. I suggest that any rational person do the same.

You hope that Moonbeam will get the state to bankruptcy all the quicker. Yes he will.

What would bankruptcy mean? It will mean that a lot of Stuff will Hit the Fan. Stuff such that your own personal safety will be in peril. Bankruptcy will not be a fun, easy, oh-everyday-don’t-concern-yourself-about-it normality. You’re looking at possibly large numbers of people, none of whom resemble you or have your outlook, being cut off from the state’s mammary gland. That gun you keep in your nightstand won’t be enough to stave off the social unrest that’s already brewing there. It probably won’t be enough when it does dawn on you that you have to get out fast once the SHTF.

We’re not seeking to isolate California from “the rest of the country,” because functionally it’s no longer part of the country. We’re seeking to isolate it from the country.
